Second hard disc questions

Post by Peter Howk » Wed, 02 May 2007 00:43:58

I've been using a second hard drive on an Ultra 5 (Sol 10) for a while
[1], but am setting up an x86 box (Sol 10) to use instead and would
like to move the disc from one machine to the other whilst keeping the
data intact. I've a couple of questions.

1) Is it ok to move a UFS formatted disc from Sparc to x86? Does it
work?

2) Are entries in /dev/dsk automatically created when discs are
detected or do I have to manually add entries?

Peter

[1] The ultra 5's graphics output has gone wibbly, an IDE channel died
a while back and there were 'motherboard' warnings popping up on the
console. I figured it was time to change hardware :-)

Data cannot be read direct from disk from UFS Sparc to UFS x86; only
ZFS is endian neutral.

Your best bet is a fresh install on the x86 box then transfer your
files via network or external medium (example: ZFS formatted USB hard
drive).

Thank you for the quick answer, I'll try and juggle the files onto
another disc
and format the original to ZFS or x86 UFS and copy them back.

Read up on zfs export/import. It's the easiest way of moving a pool
from one machine to another. I use a bunch of USB sticks configured as
a pool to transfer between hosts.
