'System DSN' vs. 'File DSN'

In our company programmers always use 'System DSN' iso 'File DSN'.
Does anyone know why this is done? Are there performance issues?
It seems to mee that File DSN is easier to use since you don't have to add a
System DSN to each computer where an application runs on?

Or am I missing something?

Actually, not having a DSN is even easier.

See http://www.yqcomputer.com/
doing this.

Thanks Doug,
This works like it should.
It took a while before I could test your suggestions, but now we don't have
to enter the DSN info on 100+ PC's
You saved us heaps!
