msn mess vs. win mess

howdy, y'all:

i currently use the windows mess with the msn options installed. other than
skinnable chats, is there any reason to disable my win mess and switch over
to the msn mess?

tia,

evan

Greetings Evan,

Which one you use is entirely up to you -- however, here are some of the differences.

Most notably, MSN Messenger 6 has support for display pictures, custom emoticons, some new
file transfer capabilities (can send files through the server), a new(er) ' *** ' feature,
built-in games, and the custom backgrounds.
See the 'Learn More' links here:
http://www.yqcomputer.com/

Which one you use is up to you, and a matter of personal choice (and based upon your needs
and likes), however one thing to keep in mind, Windows Messenger must still be installed on
Windows XP in order for MSN Messenger to retain full functionality (Remote Assistance,
Whiteboard, Application Sharing, etc.).

maybe i know too much for my own good...

in order to keep both from rmess's from running at the same time, i disabled
win mess in gpedit. msn mess appears okay, but have i reduced functionality
or otherwise 'gone too far' by doing this?

a little knowledge, eh?

thx, again.

i Evan,

You can do that, however when other applications (or if you engage Remote Assistance in some
instances) try to load Windows Messenger -- the application may appear to "hang" for up to a
minute (or two) as it tries to load Windows Messenger.

msn mess vs. win mess

i jonathan:

i just ran into an instance where having win mess disabled causes a hang. it
was a bit unexpected to me to. i even posted to another newsgroup before i
remembered your wise words.

in oe, when i go tools|address book and right-click on a contact and select
properties, all is well. if, however, i right-click on a contact and select
properties from the contacts bar view (just below the folders view), oe
hangs for about 10-15 seconds before opening the contact's property dialog.

so, i guess the contacts view is 'live' via win mess. now that i think about
it, oe seemed to open more slowly also. AND, with only msn mess running,
only my wab contacts were in the contact view whereas with win mess running,
i get wab and online contacts. interesting, though, is i do NOT have 'log on
to win mess' checked. ah, sweet mysteries of life...

thx, again for your help.

i Evan,

You should be able to fix this by closing Outlook Express, then downloading and running this
.reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/stopmessenger_oe.reg
Then restart Outlook Express.

This will disable more then just that checkbox and should eliminate this problem.
