Error 1075: The dependency service does not exist ...

This is the result of my attempts to use Systems Center Virtual Machine
Manager to convert a VMware-host to a Virtual Server-host.

The Virtual Server - Service does not start, giving me the message
Could not start the Virtual Server service on Local Computer.
Error 1075: The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for

I installed a Virtual Machine Manager Agent on this server to convert the
VMware-Image. But while converting, I received the error message that the
first part of the vmdk-File is already in use and can't be written. So i
decided to run the Virtual Machine Agent with higher user privileges but the
service would fill the Event Log with entries like

Event Type: Error
Event Source: DCOM
Event Category: None
Event ID: 10016
Date: 15.10.2007
Time: 12:34:10
Computer: #########
The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Launch
permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
to the user NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE SID (S-1-5-20). This security
permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at

Even changing the service logon back didn't get it started. So I uninstalled
the Agent and restarted, trying to install it again in the original state but
from now on, Virtual Server itself would not start - also with different user
privileges from Local System to Network Service to a domain user with
Administrator privileges.

So, first: How do I get the Virtual Server up and running again?
And second: How can I install the SCVMM Agent so it can actually access the

Can you check the 'services' panel to see if the VM helper service is
there? Also - can you try running 'net start VMM' from the command
line? Finally - are you running VS2005R2 or VS2005R2SP1?

Hi Benjamin,

Yes, the VM helper service is running, along with the Virtual Machine
Manager Agent and the Virtual Disk service - all as Local System.

We're running VS2005R2 on a Windows Server 2003 SP1

I've read so far that this problem occurs with wrong registry entries
pointing to non-existing services and components... but i'm a bit puzzled
what to look for

Cheers, Robert

Had the dependency issue pre VS2005R2, however the fix may help as the
error message is the same.

Check and compare the 'virtualserver', 'vmh', and 'vmm' services
registry keys on the broken server with the registry
keys from a working virtual server. If different, export from the
working one and import to the other.

Thank you for your answers

I finally went through it and reinstalled VS2005R2 again, as i didn't want
to mess around with the registry and there was no healthy installation i
could compare to...

i checked after the uninstall for remaining Service entries in the registry
and as there were none, installed again - and now it's working.

But the Problems with the SCVMM still exist. Now when i want to convert a VM
to VS2005, it starts creating a new VS2005 machine but aborts because "A
virtual machine with this name already exists". Any ideas? :S
