The task pane can only display an HTML page. But I did some searching out on
the net and found that it's possible to get a PDF to display as an OBJECT in
HTML, and I was sucessful loading up a PDF in the task pane. Cool! I don't
know what the ideal width and height would be, so play with them as you
will.

For your scenario, you might have a second HTML page in your solution with
the PDF embedded, which the link navigates to. That way you won't have to
load the PDF viewer every time the solution loads.

Here's the code:

<html>
<body>
<OBJECT CLASSID="clsid:CA8A9780-280D-11CF-A24D-444553540000" WIDTH=450
HEIGHT=450> <PARAM NAME="SRC" VALUE="myPDF.pdf"> </OBJECT>
</body>
</html>

I believe that we don't allow you to get the path to the solution cache from
within the solution, because that would mean giving information about a
user's whole file system - a security risk.

If you're using a fully trusted solution, things could work differently, but
in an untrusted form you will have to keep the PDF separate from the form
template in order to open an entire browser window.
