Can't log into live messenger

Post by ZGNvb2 » Sun, 29 Oct 2006 00:33:01

I have been unable to log into Live Messenger since upgrading my Beta IE7
install to the release version. I can still log in using windows messenger
but when I try Live it gives me error code 80048820, extended error 80048411.

I've tried all the recommended fixes i could find (date time, reg clearing
file, registering dlls, etc.) but it's still not working. any suggestions?

Thanks!

Greetings,

Try deleting MSN Messenger from app data

To do this, go to start, run, and type "%appdata%/microsoft/"

and delete the MSN Messenger folder

See if that helps at all

Can't log into live messenger

Post by amx0cmF2ZW » Mon, 30 Oct 2006 06:44:01

Hi, Jonathan,

Unfortunately all existing solutions do not work for me. I have an
IBM-T42 with XP-Professional (SP2) + IE 7.0. Me and my wife each has a
windows XP account and a messenger (hotmail) account.

I tried to 1) uninstall Windows Live messenger, 2) remove all related
registries (MSN Messenger and WindowsLive Keys), 3) remove MSN Messenger
application data cache, 4) reboot and reinstall Windows Live Messenger. What
happens is that, if I login to windows XP with my wife's account, I can sign
on to MSN using Live Messenger with either of our messenger accounts. If I
login to windows XP with my account, I cannot sign on to MSN with either of
our messenger accounts. The two little guy just keep spinning, but others
can see my MSN account status change from offline to online.

I can logon to MSN using my windows XP account + Windows Messenger.

Therefore, Windows Live Messenger must be using something else stored in
my windows account (other than registry and application data cache)! Please
help.

Regards,
Jeng-Liang

i,

One more thing to add: I saved a connection log for debugging and there
is something fishy at the end. My laptop has both wireless and a network
card and I have a DSL wireless router. It seems that Live Messenger is
waiting for some event to happen but didn't get response.

i,

I don't have Zone Alarm installed. I tried to disable windows firewall,
norton auto-protect, unload my Ad-Watch, but still cannot logon to MSN with
Live Messenger. The strange thing is that it only happens to one of the
windows XP accounts.

reetings,

In that case, delete the reg keys for MSN Messenger

Go to Start, run, and type regedit

Then, navigate to the following key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\

And delete the MSNMessenger key.

Then, restart Messenger.

If Messenger still fails to respond, then you will have to reinstall
Messenger.

Tell me if that helps :-)

Hi,

I have tried that already (see my first post, I removed both Microsoft/MSN
Messenger and Microsoft/WindowsLive keys, uninstall, reinstall...) and it
does not help.

I tried this and it didn't help. I've already tried reinstalling and that
didn't change it either. Any other suggestions?

Note: the other guy in this thread isn't me and so far as I know his issues
are different than mine.

Thanks!

My Pc is a similar setup with exact same problem.
IBM R50e laptop, running wireless using an adsl router.
The NIC card I disabled because it look like it was trying to use the NIC to connect. I've also tried plugging in via the NIC and not wireless and that doesn't make any difference. The Messenger tests all pass as well, switched all security off, installed, re-installed, deleted regkeys, checked settings on ie, upgraded IE to Ie7. can't get an error that I can use to pin point the problem at all, except that it just sits there and does nothing !
