search excel file or html file generated from excel file

I need some urgent assistance!
I need to be able to search an excel file or html file generated from the excel file and show the results in an html page.
I can't do anything that needs web access or any kind of server activity. This will be loaded onto several laptops that won't have internet access, and setting up a local server on each one would be way too much.
So I have page "A" with a search box.
when text is entered in the search box and you press enter, it needs to check through the excel file or the html file generated from excel (whichever is easier) and display the results in a new html window. The Excel file and html file generated from it both contain local links to other html file as well as text.

thanks in advance!

Basic HTML has absolutely no inbuilt ability to perform a search. Such
things are handled via the server, or via scripts on the server.

The reason is that HTML is static. It can take no actions. For security
reasons, client side JavaScript has no access to the computer's file system.

You can do it locally, IF you run the pages thru a local server. Otherwise
you can only use client-side JavaScript in .htm files. A server can process
and run scripts. A server can DO things.

If (guessing windows machines) IIS or PWS is installed on the local intranet
server- then you can do this with ASP. You could use an Excel file as a
database.
If IIS or PWS is installed on each laptop they want it to run on- then you
can do this so it's self-contained and portable
(you'll also probably run into the fun of some of the laptops being XP Home
edition and not being able to install IIS)

It's may be possible to do with VB and .hta files without a server; but
that's not my area. .hta files are web pages that have extra rights and can
operate like applications. (windows only)

If your other question (right-clicking to open image in a specific app) is
related to the same job/client - there may be things the client is requiring
that can't be done the way they want. It may be that it would take a custom
Application to do it instead of a webpage. A compiled executable.
In the other thread, you mentioned 'logged in" and admin rights. If that is
for the same job, how are you going to control login and admin if they are
plain html pages?
