svn:ignore?

svn:ignore?

Post by dw_postin » Sat, 01 Nov 2008 01:04:14

I use SourceForge for a few projects, and I'm used to using svn:ignore to keep
certain files (like my DB password files) from being uploaded to the public
repository.

I was thrilled to see DW has support for SVN, as that means I don't have to
keep switching to SynchroSVN to send up my changes.

However...

DW wants to send all my passwords and several thousand Doxygen-generated files
(that are cloaked to SVN via svn:ignore), and I can't see how to stop it.
Cloaking != svn:ignore.

How to I stop files and directories in the repository workspace from being
considered in the repository?

Sheesh. I guess this is the wrong forum to ask this question.

Any suggestions as to a better place to ask?

I'll be happy to do so, but so far, it's crickets chirping...

I opened up a support issue, but that remains unanswered.

I really think that SVN support was sort of an afterthought, and needs some
more development. I have great faith in Adobe, and I'm sure that it will be
improved, but the current implementation of SVN is totally worthless without
svn:ignore. I suspect that most other properties are also unsupported, but
ignore is the only one I use.

No, it wasn't an afterthought. It has been requested for a long time,
and it was decided to implement it this time round. However, it's not a
full Subversion client. If you're a regular Subversion user and see ways
in which it can/should be improved, I suggest you submit a feature
request through the official channel:

I don't know the answer to your question, but will try to find out.

CVS(later SVN) feature was requested by us since version DW4. It was not
possible as I know because some internal problems in the past in
Macromedia with SCM (not sure, rumors said).
Now it seems it was added, but is very basic.
In this meantime we developed some addons for DW which will help you yo
use inside of DW, SVN or DW.

If you will need more info, please contact me, I do not want to
advertise here a product.

Regards,
Lehel

The Adobe developer I contacted is out of the office until mid-November,
so I won't be able to add any further information before then.

svn:ignore?

Thanks so much!

I was feeling lonely.

If there is a workaround, that would be great. I'm not in a big hurry. I've
been using another SVN GUI for a couple of years, and have a good workflow
going. I probably only use a subset of SVN's capabilities; but I use Perforce
in my "day job," so SVN is a bit like swimming in the kiddie pool. It's still a
ways more usable than CVS, though.

I'm very much behind this feature, and I think its time has come. The ubiquity
of Google Code and SourceForge make this a really useful tool, since so much of
the code out there is Web code.

Thanks for adding it, and you can count on me to support it!

I now have the answer. Unfortunately, Dreamweaver CS4 does not support
svn:ignore. If you want it added to a future release, please submit a
feature request:

It is done. Thanks so much, David.

The fact that there hasn't been a hue and cry about this should trip a few
alarms. A lot of folks think that no news is good news, but, in this case, I
suspect that the quiet reception may be due to the fact that serious developers
aren't using this feature at all.

I really, really want this feature to work. It would help my workflow a great
deal.
