Dotting the I's and crossing the T's

I'm just working out how to document the functionality of an application I
have inherited from an off-shore company that was outsourced to create it.
The system consists of lots of SQL mixed into the forms, and lots of stored
procs too, in fact the SQL script to generate the DB is 5MB in size. The
entire system is documented in a mixture of English (from the original
workers who could speak English) and Turkish (from the workers that finished
it off who could not speak English).

Out of the 5MB script this single line caught my eye. I think it's great
:-)

The fact that it comes from Turkey is a dead giveaway.

Hi Pete,

I see that one of the 'i's doesn't have a dot on it, but don't know the
significance of that or how you create that on a keyboard, unless it's a
special keyboard. I'd hate to have to sift through 5 MB of script looking
for that kinda stuff! Good luck to you!

That IS the significance. Turkish uses two forms of 'i'. One has the
dot on top, and has a 'long' sound ('eye'). The other has no dot and
has a 'short' sound ('ihh'). To complicate matters, the upper-case
letters do the same (have either dot or no dot).

You create them by having a Turkish keyboard layout enabled... <G>

P.S. 'Erbas' is 'sergeant' or 'soldier' in Turkish...

Ah, that 'splains it. I thought it might be a language-specific issue, but
my knowledge of things "Turkish" is along the lines of "Happy Thanksgiving,
Turkey". :^)

Cheers,

Hi Pete,

Yeah, clue 1 was obvious, but with no knowledge of the language, clue 2
could only lead me to conclude that it probably had something to do with the
language.
