Server not Found, 10061

Post by Clay Shann » Sun, 08 Oct 2006 09:09:16

Delphi 2006, SQL Server 2000, dbGo components, MIDAS/Datasnap with
TSocketConnection

All of a sudden, I am getting error 10061 and "Server Not Available" with
the following call in Client DM:

SocketConnection.Connected := True;

(SocketConnection is a TSocketconnection component)

I never got this before, it just started up this afternoon. What could cause
this, or what traditionally/historically causes such an error to pop up all
of a sudden?

I should note: it's pretty nigh impossible for the server to really not be
found, as at the present stage of development it is on the same machine as
the client.

I'm using sockets to communicate with a real-time piece. Could the problem
be that the MIDAS socket connection is interfering with the socket
communications between the client and the real-time? If so, should I switch
to some other type of communication between the client and
server/middle-tier app?

Or, is it advisable to switch from n-tier to C/S? As it turns out (I didn't
know when I started in on the design) that the clients will all run on the
server and not be installed on the users' machines, anyway...

Do you mean that you are using Terminal Services? That is the only way
to have multiple clients execute a program on a single server PC.

Each user will run their own instance of the client, so there will be many
instances of the client running, but only one of the server app.

More specifically, there will be a separate icon on the server for each
(around 12) instances of the client. They will differ only in the command
line parameter, which will identify which station is running the client app.
That's how I picture it as of now, anyway; it's not exactly finalized--still
rather fluid. And yet tens of thousands of lines of code have been written.
There is probably a lot of refactoring in my future.

socket error 10061 (WSAECONNREFUSED) arises because your connection
attempt was actively refused. Possible causes for this are:

- server is inactive.

- your connection violates some security rule of the host. Check
firewalls, proxies and tcp-wrappers for this.

- the port is already used.

- TCP protocol is not active and listening on whatever port you use.

- some antivirus/firewall app reassigned the port you are trying to
connect to for another purpose.

Check this 5 possibilities. If it doesn't work I'll try to think of
others...

Good luck

The server and client apps are on the same (local/development) machine.

Apparently it was just one of those odd gremlins--Monday morning (and all
day) it was fine, although no code was changed.

FWIW by server inactive I meant the server app, not the server machine

The server starts automatically when the client starts. Of course, it is
possible, I guess, that it wouldn't for some reason (scktsrvr.exe not
running, for instance<--no pun intended).

could it be that the client tries to connect *before* the server has
actually started?
