What are mprexe.exe, rpcss.exe, wmiexe.exe, ddhelp.exe, and mmtask.tsk?

Hi:

I just found a list of all the programs that are running
whenever I am using win98se.
I knew what most of them are, but these 5 stumped me.
All 5 are found in my win98se\system subdirectory, and all start up
at bootup from the registry..

mprexe.exe 28672 bytes 4-23-99
mmtask.tsk 1184 bytes 4-23-99
rpcss.exe 20480 bytes 4-23-99
wmiexe.exe 16384 bytes 4-23-99
ddhelp.exe 32768 bytes 12-2-02

Can anyone tell me what these files are, what they do, and
what would happen if I killed or deleted them?
I'm paranoid, and I don't like to have something running when
I have no idea what it does.

Thanks!

ron

Those all look normal to me. Only "rpcss.exe" is not actually running
here. DrWatson will offer a brief description of them, in the Tasks tab.
You may sort any column by clicking it's header.

"START, Run, DRWATSON"; now, D-Clk it's button in the Tray.

What diagnosis is on the first tab? Copy/paste it's contents,
using the menu. Close DrWatson, but leave it in the Tray. It sits
waiting for a crash, then traps it, putting info into the Diagnosis tab.

(a) "START, Find, F/F, DrWatson.exe". (Should be in "C:\Windows".)
(b) R-Clk it, point to "Send to" & click "Desktop (Create shortcut)".
(c) R-Clk the shortcut on the Desktop, & select "Cut".
(d) Open Explorer to "C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp"
(e) R-Clk in the R-Pane, & select "Paste".

Now, it will always boot to the Tray, waiting for a crash or a D-Clk.

Henri:

Wow! What a great site. (But sometimes hard to access.)
Thanks for this very valuable resource. I've already boookmarked it
for future reference.
Thanks again!

First pick one of these to identify what loads at boot. Next, see
whether there is an option in it's menus to disable it from starting up.
If you really want to rid yourself of it on a more permanent basis, then
look for it in "Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs". However, it isn't
often easy to know what is what in there. One of these URL's may say.
Only last, go to StartUpCop.

http://www.yqcomputer.com/ 's StartUpCop has "undo", and it is more than a
combination of "START, Run, MSInfo32, Software Environment, Startup
Programs" and "START, Run, MSConfig, Startup tab". It can even do a
permanent delete. Of course, first see whether the app has an option in
it's own menus to remove itself from the Startup Group. This is
configurable, and one may maintain multiple configurations.
