Problems installing Microsoft Intellimouse Explorerer 2.0 USB wireless mouse on win-98se

I've downloaded and installed the Intellipoint 4.12 software from
Microsoft, and have pointed the driver update mechanism to any and
all .INF files present in the intellipoint directories, but Device
Manager is still showing a problem with this USB device.

Specifically, under Human Interface Devices, I have a yellow ! for a
USB HID, which is giving this message:

------------
the NTKERN.VXD device loader(s) for this device could not load the
device driver (code 2). To fix this, click the update driver to
update the device driver.
------------

Strange that the only place I have an "ntkern.vxd" file is in the
unpacked image of my win-98 distro cd - there is no corresponding file
with that name located in any working c:\windows directory or sub-
directory.

When I try to "update the driver", no matter where I point the update
mechanism, it does not find any suitable driver (even the on-line
Microsoft Update mechanism does not result in anything useful or
different).

The intellipoint installation process did update my existing
msmouse.vxd (4/23/99) to (6/18/02) but that apparently isin't good
enough to get this to work.

The mouse in question is a "Microsoft IntellimouseExplorer 2.0", model
1007. The base unit is labelled as model 1009, "Wireless Intellimouse
Explorer Receiver 2.0 USB/PS2 compatible" (but it has a USB connector
- not PS/2).

Any ideas here?

Have you tried putting Human Interface Devices in the Google Search Box?

I have that file. ntkern.vxd , under C:\Windows\System.
It is 189kb and dated May 11 1998 and is a virtual device driver.
This is in my Win98SE OS.
Perhaps put ntkern.vxd for Win98SE in the search box in Google for
more help.
Is your processor faster than 2.1GHz? IF so, you may need a patch from MS.
Do you have a USB2.0 PCI card? Are its drivers installed?

They do make a USB to PS2 connector. One came with my Logitech MX510 wired
mouse and I use that connector if I have to use Safe Mode or DOS. There
should have been one with that particular mouse (the connector is probably
green, in color).

Not all mice and keyboards will work with both, even if you do have the
adapter.

The OP did state that his mouse was 2.0 USB/PS2 compatible so I figured I
would give him that info.
But, you are very correct.
Thanks
