Device drivers for Microsoft PS/2 IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0

My Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 in Win98 SE shows this:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32\vmouse.vxd (File version: 4.10.2225)
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSMOUSE.VXD (File version: 11.40.852)
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MOUSE.DRV (File version: 9.01.0.000)

I don't know why vmouse.vxd doesn't show in Msinfo32 (mine doesn't
either) but if you download the latest drivers, then surely that is
all you need to do?

Alan, I respectfully disagree with your advice. IntelliPoint 4.12 should
not be used with IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0.
The only update I've found to IntelliPoint 4.0 for this particular mouse is
IntelliPoint 4.01 per the links below.

However, IntelliPoint 4.12 should be used for IntelliMouse (discontinued),
IntelliMouse Optical, IntelliMouse with IntelliEye (discontinued) .... but
NOT with IntelliMouse Explorer.

My Device Manager recommends I keep my present drivers as they are the best
drivers for my system. That's what I'm going to do. If I had chosen to
install the drivers for IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0 [5-14-2001] in lieu of
the drivers for PS/2 Compatible Mouse Port, the only driver file would be
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32\vmouse.vxd (File version: 4.10.2223).

Device drivers for Microsoft PS/2 IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0

ey Alan. I had installed IntelliPoint 4.12 approx 2 months ago. When one
visits the Download Software site, the first step is to 'Select your
product.' Well, I did NOT see IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0 specifically
listed (like Explorer 4.0). So I referred to my original shipping
container, and yes, this mouse used an IntelliEye Optical sensor -- and
every IntelliMouse (except Explorer) showed 4.12 as the software to
download. This seemed like a no-brainer to me, so I installed 4.12. I seem
to remember that 4.12 created numerous folders and hundreds of files. I
tried using Add/Remove Programs to remove IntelliPoint 4.12. I
successfully removed it from Add/Remove Programs, but all the numerous
folders and files remained on my hard drive! I went in and manually
deleted every folder created by 4.12, and then used my IntelliPoint 4.0 CD
to reinstall the software.

One final question for you regarding this mouse. In 'msconfig' under
'Startup' -- I have a checked box followed by 'POINTER' "point32.exe"
(skip quotes). Also in Start | Programs | Microsoft Mouse -- Microsoft
Mouse Properties shows the application Target: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Hardware\Mouse\Mousex32.exe" .

Shouldn't the Target be "point32.exe" instead of "Mousex32.exe" as in
msconfig?

| Oddly enough, I thought I had followed the correct path at the time on

| I wonder how I went wrong four times?

No, I don't see that they should be the same.
Point32 launches the mouse system at startup but that is a different
task from accessing Mouse Properties while running.
Mine uses this instead of Mousex32.exe:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Hardware\Mouse\dplaunch.exe" Mouse CPL
