Windows 98 will not boot beyond the windows 98 screen

Post by Courtne » Wed, 22 Oct 2003 22:00:48

My computer froze and when I rebooted it, the booting
stopped at the win 98 display scree. It would not display
anything else. when I pressed escape it then went to a ms-
dos type environment where I only saw
C:\C:\windows.dlchlp.exe
NB: I have windows 98 SE.

I started from a boot disk and did a scand disk and saw
four bad clusters at the beginning of the drive.

Could someone help me sort this out? Any help would be
greatly appreciated

Boot into DOS (not DOS under Windows) and do a Scandisk from there. Then
reboot into Windows and see if the problem has been resolved.

To Boot into DOS, hold down the F8 key as you boot up, then select "Command
Prompt Only" from the menu. After you see the C: prompt, just type Scandisk
and hit Enter.

Start the computer, tap the F8 key repeatedly until the startup
menu appears, then select "Command Prompt", type
"scanreg /restore" and press "Enter". Restore the previous
registry, then restart.

(1) Saw four bad clusters-- it said it found/repaired them, or they were
colored bad in the display?
(2) Were you able to boot after the Scandisk?

About 114 posts about "dlchlp.exe", but it is mysterious. (I don't have
one.) Were you once Win95?

Thanks or Good Luck,
There may be humor in this post, and,
Naturally, you will not sue,
should things get worse after this,
