No, you have to buy a CD. MS doesn't make them anymore, so they are
getting harder to find. eBay may be your best bet.

Look a full retail version, or an Upgrade version, or the Win98SE
Update CD. Avoid OEM disks, which will not upgrade an existing system.

Try ebay, MS no longer sells them.

At a computer store or on eBay. You'll need either the Update,
Upgrade, or full retail CD. Avoid OEM CDs, they won't upgrade an
existing system.

You have to get an upgrade disk. They may be available on e-bay or similar.
You cannot legally download an upgrade to Win98SE.

How do I upgrade to Windows 98 SE? Do I have to back up
everything on my hard drive first? Is there a simple way
to do this? Thanks for any advice.

First of all, you need to BUY Windows98SE, unless you have access to a CD of
someone else's. Whenever this issue comes up in the newsgroup, people
recommend checking e-Bay for the software.

Backup: You need to back up all your data files. That means the stuff YOU
create, download or work with, like docs, spreadsheets, music, photos, etc.
The upgrade process won't force you to do this, although you may see a
dialog box with a suggestion.

In reality, you should be backing these things up daily, weekly or monthly,
depending on how sad or crazy you'd be if you lost it all. Your computer
will die at some point. It's not a question of IF, but rather WHEN. It
*will* happen.

What I do is use BootIt NG to shrink the existing partition, move it to the end
of the hard drive, create a new partition, make it Active, the reboot to the
Windows Startup floppy boot disk and install. You then have all your personal
files available to copy over, and you even have a backup system to reboot to if
the new system is giving you problems.

Ideally, you also have, on hand, the Windows Security Updates CD, Antivirus,
Firewall, and all your applications, ready to install even before connecting to
the internet. When you finally do connect, make Windows Updates your very first
stop, followed closely by antivirus update.
