Post by R2l1bGlvIF » Wed, 15 Dec 2004 21:05:09

Hello, I'm trying Virtial PC 2004 (45 days trial) on Windows XP Pro, so I
still dont't know anything about this product. When I first install it with
the wizard choosing Windows Server 2003 as operating system, I receive the
following message at the prompt: "Reboot and select proper boot device or
insert boot media in selected boot device".
Anyone cen help me?
Thanks, Giulio Pansironi

Reboot and select proper Boot device

You have only created a Virtual PC capable of hosting Windows Server 2003.
You have not actually installed Windows Server 2003. You now need to
install Windows Server 2003 from its CD-ROMs.

Reboot and select proper Boot device

At the top of the Window that's asking you to insert the media, under CD,
select the CD drive to use for installing the guest OS. Virtual PC doesn't
look for a CD drive -- you have to tell it which one to use...
When the virtual PC restarts, it will boot to the bootable CD and begin the
OS installation.

Once you get started, you'll be amazed at how fast you catch on. I'm far
from being an expert yet with this product, but have had few problems in the
three days I've been playing with it.

Good Luck!

Reboot and select proper Boot device

Post by Karl » Fri, 07 Jul 2006 01:07:55

Hi all,
It seems I have a slightly abnormal problem to everyone else even
though I get the same "reboot and select proper boot device" error
message.

I have downloaded both the XP Pro sp2 and Vista Beta iso images direct
from the MSDN subscribers site.

I have tried to create new VPC's using both of these images and neither
wants to boot up and install into their respective VPC's - giving me
the quoted error message.

I have installed Deamon tools and have mounted both iso's as images and
both seem to autoplay ok when I do.

I have tried mounting the iso's directly in vpc aswell as mounting them
in deamon tools and trying to use the 'physical' drive it creates, but
no luck on either case.

Does anyone have any suggestion as to what I should try next?

Thanks

Make sure that you UNcheck the attach CD/DVD drive to secondary IDE channel
in the settings sectrion.

Hope that helps.

I've just tried your suggestion but no joy I'm afraid.

The complete error is (as I am sure you are all aware) :

"
Reboot and Select proper Boot device
or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device
"

Have you tried hitting enter at this error message after you have
captured the ISO file?

You have created a virtual machine. What you have to do now is install an
operating system on that virtual machine. What OS do you plan to run on this
vm? Vista?

If you have downloaded Vista as an image file, drag the image on to the
CD drive icon at the bottom of the vm display screen and press return to
start the install of Vista (Just as you would put the CD/DVD into the drive
on a physical machine).

If you want to install an early OS like W98 which does not boot from
CD/DVD, you will need to use a floppy boot disk to start the vm. If you
don't have a floppy disk drive on your host machine you can download a
virtual boot floppy image and drag it on to the floppy drive icon (as
above).

If you have the image of the OS,
When making New,
Try not adjusting the RAM.
And select the OS image at the end.
