Hello,

I am hoping someone might have some insight into this problem.

I have an XP:SP2 machine with VS6, VS.2003 and VS.2005 installed on
it. I had to install IIS because the tech who made the machine for me
didn't include it in the first place. IIS installs fine but whenever
I try to use the URL http://localhost/ I get error: 500 - Internal
Server Error. Needless to say, this is the same message that comes up
when I try to create a web application under VS.2003.

I have tried to remove and re-install IIS several times to correct
this problems but nothing works, of course. I'm not worrying about
running aspnet_regiis just yet. I'm focussing on getting the web
server to work!

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Update:

I turned off the "User Friendly HTTP" errors under IE and tried the
localhost web site again and got: "Server Application Error
The server has encountered an error while loading an application ..."
Okay, big surprise there. So, as suggested I went into the System
Event Log for WinXP and I get this warning each time I tried to access
the page:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: W3SVC
Event Category: None
Event ID: 36
Date: 8/21/2007
Time: 2:53:33 PM
User: N/A
Computer: TEST001
Description:
The server failed to load application '/LM/W3SVC/1/ROOT'. The error
was 'Class not registered
'.


Anyone know the fix for this one?

Okay, thanks for the link. I got a few plans from that thread.

Plan 'A':
1) Open Command Prompt and type "cd \windows\system32\inetsrv"
2) Run "msdtc -resetlog"
3) Run "rundll32 wamreg.dll, CreateIISPackage"
4) Run "regsvr32 asptxn.dll"
5) Run "iisreset"
6) Reboot...

I should have added the zeroth step (0th) of re-installing IIS with
just the _default_ components (not the full components). I guess
installing the all of the IIS components under Windows XP causes this
problem. Something in that mess is corrupted.
