Recently I have noticed that overnight Outlook is recieving messages
while the program is closed.

The mail icon appears in the task bar - even though Outlook has been
closed down overnight.

When this happens - closing Outlook does not delete the items in the
deleted file (as chosen in options)

In order to make this feature work again - I need to reboot the

O\S is XP

By "Outlook" do you mean Outlook Express (OE) which is part of Internet
Explorer or Outlook97/98/2000+ which is part of Office? And which
version? (If you don't know, in your mail program select Help, About.)

Outlook Express cannot receive any mail if it is truly closed. If it is
minimized to the task bar, then it is still open and running. You need
to do a File, Exit (or click the X in the upper right hand corner of the
MAIN window) to close OE.

If it was truly closed, then some other program would have had to
restart OE for it to get any mail. There are some 3rd party POP3 mail
check programs that can be set to start your mail program if mail is
found on the mail server. Are you perhaps running one of those?
