Hi Susan,
The reason why I posted this to your attention is because I was reading a
post reply from you dated a few years ago that is directly related to my
issues. your reply was that you got a new switch. however I'm sure there is
more to it than that. Cn you please review this posting and post your
suggestions or feedback. thanks.

This is sort of a repost and a double post as I'm not sure what components
(ISA or Outlook) are my problem and I have yet to find an answer to this
issue. Searched the KB's, googled the error message and have been led in the
right direction but still no resolution. Here's my problem.

When using using Outlook from a Windows 2003 Server desktop, an RDP or ICA
connection I cannot use the Outlook client. I have remote users who connect
using Citrix. They logon to the Citrix server desktop (Windows 2003 Server)
and use Outlook from there. They can also use Outlook from within Citrix as
it is a Published Application. I know some of you are going to suggest why
don't they use OWA but let's not get into that. I can log onto any
workstation here in the office and connect to the Exchange server and open
their Outlook. What I and they cannot do now is after I create a new profile
on the Windows 2003 server desktop locally or from a RDP or ICA remote
connection. Open Outlook I am always getting this error message..........

"Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Unable to open the Outlook window.
The set of folders could not be opened. The connection to the Microsoft
Exchange Server is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to
complete this action".

OK so here is the confusing problem. After I attempt to use Outlook and get
this error message I check my Event Viewer Application log. Everytime it
creates 2 entries. The first one is always...

Source: Outlook
Category: None
Event ID: 26
Description: Connection to the Microsoft Exchange Server has been lost.
Outlook will restore the connection when possible.

The second one it reports immediately after is always..

Type: Information
Source: Outlook
Category: None
Event ID: 26
Description: Connection to the Microsoft Exchange Server has been restored.

From my earlier posting I did receive some helpful hints on what could be
causing the problems. I'm leaning torwards ISA but cannot figure out which
rule or what rule I need to create to resolve the problem. Please any
suggestions or advice if greatly appreciated.

FACTS
I am trying to setup an employee's laptop to connect to our exchange
server. The laptop is new and is running Vista & Outlook 2003. I
would hate to wipe the computer and install Windows xp because of this
issue.


ISSUE NEEDING RESOLVED/QUESTIONED
1. Connecting via http
2. Ping the location
3. Security settings trying to access OWA


EXPLANATION OF FACTS REGARDING ISSUES
Regarding Questions in Order

1. I know the connection works for this specific account and the
location because the desktop, albeit, running Windows xp with Office
2003, can connect to the Exchange Server from the same location.
There is no firewall setting on the router to block incoming traffic.
The laptop's firewall was removed to determine if this was the issue.
It was not.

2. Although I can access the server via the internet browser using
OWA, I cannot ping the server from the laptop.. My ping requests are
timing out.

3. I was having some difficulty accessing OWA with the laptop until I
set the security settings lower. Is there another security setting I
would need to set lower for this laptop to connect?


SUMMARY
Outlined are the basic issues I am working on regarding the employee's
laptop. As you can tell, there is an issue with a security setting as
the laptop will not ping the server yet the laptop will allow a
connection to the server using OWA. Believing that all settings are
factory with the exception of internet security settings regarding the
ability to access webpages, firewall settings being removed, and
antivirus checking turned off, please provide any assistance to this
problem.
