Generating a table of figures and table of tables using 'insert caption'

Hi, <br><br>I have set up a template in Word 2008 for some scientists to use. They want to insert captions using the 'Insert', 'Caption...' option for tables and figures, rather than using the style sheet 'figure caption' and 'table caption' that I set up so that the captions can be picked up by the cross-reference function. <br><br>Is there a way for my figure caption and table caption styles to be picked up by the cross-reference function? <br><br>Alternatively, is there any way that I can create a table of figures and a table of tables using captions generated by the 'Insert' 'Caption...' option? I seem to be able to create one table that includes both figures and tables by telling the table to include anything styled as a 'caption', but not one that only shows figures and one that only shows tables. <br><br>Ideally, any solution would be set up by me before I supplied the template, as anything complicated that has to be done as they are creating their documents is likely to result in the template not being used. <br><br>Thanks!

Perhaps I'm mistaking your goal but I can't help wondering why you don't
simply go with the flow & let the users insert captions as they apparently
prefer. Word's built-in Table of Figures & Table of Tables feature will
generate the separate tables you seem to be looking for -- as well as
separate tables for any other caption label you define yourself [such as
Photograph:, Illustration:, Chart:, etc.].

Additionally, any of the caption labels -- built-in or custom -- can be
referred to by cross-references just as Headings, Bookmarks, Footnotes, etc.

If formatting of the captions needs to be done in a certain way simply
customize the built-in Caption paragraph style accordingly.

I have the impression you may be attempting to re-invent the wheel:-) Are
you trying to create Tables of Figures & Tables of Figures by using the
Table of Contents generator? What am I missing?
