not showing full screen in full screen mode

Post by Q29ubml » Sat, 15 Sep 2007 10:28:00

I have watched many movies on my laptop but they suddenly do not fill the
screen in full screen mode. They used to. Now in full screen mode there is an
1 1/2 " border around the entire video. My screen is small enough as it is
and I want to use it all! Any suggestions?

Using media player 11 on win XP

What changed... ? Did you install any third party drivers or multimedia
software... ?

I didn' think about that. I removed everything I could think of that I added
and now I am pretty sure I removed a codec that allows me to view certain
videos, but with the ones I can view there is no difference.

Is this a wide screen laptop? What video card do you have?

not showing full screen in full screen mode

I am a programmer.

I sent a person with a Vista OS ;two windows directx test programs that
were supposed to go into fullscreen mode.

They would not goto into fullscreen. When he pressed Alt-enter they
either went blank or black.

So the problem is Vista.

And I'm a web developer (congratulations) - you seem to have removed
all the context from this message, and it's not archived on my ISP's
news server. So - what are you replying to ?

They were supposed to ? Or they actually did ? What test conditions
did you use to establish this ? OS, Media Player version tested,
graphics settings, codec and file format seem to be missing from your
assertion.

Is there some player skin installed on the Vista WMP11 ? Is the
graphics card configured to send fullscreen output to a secondary
display ? Does the video display when it's not in full screen ? Are
you using RDS or VNC on the PC when this happens ?

Well, that's an absurd thing to assert unless you can provide
diagnostic information to demonstrate that vista "must" be the problem
rather than one of dozens of other things which can influence this
result, such as (for example) graphics card drivers or settings.

Cheers - Neil

Yet again Microsoft have messed up. I have been researching this problem now
for the best part of a week. The common theme here is that Media player
versions 9, 10 and 11, (there may be other versions that don't work), will no
longer play in full screen. On systems that used to have no problem at all it
just stopped working.... or did it. Not on your life. From what I have found
out it seems that this problem occurred following a Windows Update. Thanks
Microsoft! Daily I get hastled to supply Apple MAC computers by customers who
require a system that 'just works'. Mmmm I can see their point, but MACS are
not for me. The bugs in Microsoft software are bad enough without Microsoft
making it worse on virtually a daily basis by creating new faults. What
really gets my goat, though, is Microsoft ignoring the problems, hoping that
they will disappear and denigning all knowledge of them. Come on Microsoft
fix this problem, you know about it, you know which Windows Update created
the problem. Reverse engineer it and give us a fix. AND SO CALLED EXPERTS ON
HERE STOP PANDERING TO MICROSOFT AND BUYING THEM TIME BY WASTING OURS.

R. Worley - R.S. Computers..... Hacked off with yet another Microsft fiasco.

What's the commonality that you expect to reproduce this issue?

Not showing video in full screen mode is almost certainly a video driver
based problem. These types of problems have been going on with drivers for
years. You're less frustrated with drivers than I am. Scr*w pandering,
let's make this work. You make it work by correctly identifying the source
of failure. If it's a problem in WMP, what's the repro? But I'd
suspect/bet it's the driver, as it has been in 99.9% of the time in this
situation before.

A closed system with closed drivers not having driver problems is not a huge
surprise. Microsoft kind of gives you a lot more power, but as Spiderman
says, with power comes responsibility. =\
