on demand playlist/publishing point not dynamic

Hi all,

I Have been trying to modify an on demand server side playlist whilst I
stream its content. I would like the steam to reflect the changes without the
need for the client to restart the stream. The microsoft documentation leads
me to believe this is possible and I seem to be able modify a broadcast
playlist on the fly but not an on-demand playlist. I understand there is an
asp page solution to this but I do not feel this would be the most robust
method for my requirement. I have changed all cashe settings etc. I'm using
windows media server 2003 evaluation sp1 and windows media player 9 and
requesting the stream via a publishing point and I have also tried directly
opening the serverside playlist.

any help on this greatly appreciated..

Hi there,

Slightly different topic to what you are asking... but I was hoping you
could help me out. I've been trying to modify a broadcast playlist on
the fly and having very little success. I can change the playlist no
problem.. but the publishingpoint doesn't seem to take any notice until
i stop/start it again.. have you had other experiences?

Hope to hear from you,

Dave

Hi Dave,

I didn't have a problem with this. To test I used the windows media server
publishing point playlist window. Unlike the on-demand playlist window it
showed an arrow against the currently playing item. I draged items to
different positions and the player accepted the new sequence. I did mess
around and turn all the caching options off in the publishing point
properties so that may have helped.

Ah yes.. I'm sure that works. I was trying to manually change the
actual playlist file. It seems if you do that you need to make the
publishing point re-read it...

Someone else mentioned on the forum that they had some ASP code to
issue a stop/start to a publishing point... that would be very handy!

Thanks,
Dave

My plan was to use DCOM and modify the playlist in code - I have a feeling
this will allow a broadcast playlist to be changed without the need to
restart. I got this work in terms of modifying the playlist but as I was
working with an on-demand playlist the player would not recognise the changes.

There is some good example code on the microsoft site if you are a developer
and want to try this.

Dynamically change playlist and "PlayingList" is easy when Broadcasting
with asp/asp.net or WebService. I have done this, if you need, I can
post some code.

Hi, I've found a way around this issue that doesn't require changing the
playlist on the fly. I think I know how to also achieve this with asp but
would still be interested in any asp code you have for this.

Are you meaning Broadcast on On-Demand mode?
I have done this only for Broadcast mode. But still have no any idea
for On-Demand mode.
