Problem updating Admin Install of Office 2003 with the Technical Refresh

Post by cherry » Sat, 02 Aug 2003 17:49:40

i Marc,

Thank you for the posting. As you indicated you have created an
Administrative Installation of Office 2003 Beta 2 (setup.exe with the /a
option) using the Enterprise By-Pass Suite Product Key. The install fails
with the message: The update cannot be applied. You have tried running the
ohotfix.exe from the Run box with the PIDKEY= option but it still will not
work.

We noticed you mentioned you are using opsetup.exe. This is Tablet Pack
which is Office Pack for Tablet PC. If you are not using Tablet PC, you
are not supposed to use the opsetup.exe.

Based on your description as well as our research and experience, we are
providing you with the following suggesition:

Check the product key.
===================

NOTE: A separate product key is required for all of the stand-alone Office
programs. Contact the Microsoft Activation Center to obtain this product
key. The product key for the Office 2003 suites does not work for the
stand-alone Office 2003 programs.

If you attempt to use the Office 2003 suite product key in an Office 2003
stand-alone program installation, you will receive the following error
message:

You have not entered a valid product key. Please check the number located
on the certificate of authenticity or the yellow sticker on the back of the
CD case.

The Volume License product key you need to use may or may not be included
with your Office product. Please browse to the following Microsoft Web site
for information about how to locate or obtain the product key that is
needed to install Office:

If you have any questions about Volume License product keys, contact the
Microsoft Activation Center for your region. United States customers can

This issue can occur if you try to apply an update to an advertised
Microsoft Office product. To work around this problem, before you apply
the update, run the advertised Office product to install the product on
your computer. If you have more than one program in the product (such as a
Microsoft Office suite), running any program in the product installs the
whole product.

More Information:

To create the administrative installation point:

1. Create a share on a network server for the administrative installation
point. The network share must have at least 650 megabytes (MB) of available
hard disk space.

2. On a computer that has write access to the share, connect to the server
share. The computer must be running a supported operating system: Microsoft
Windows 2000 or later, Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6a, Microsoft
Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me), or Microsoft Windows 98.

3. Click Start, click Run, and then click Browse.

4. On the Office CD-ROM, double-click Setup.exe, and then add /a to the
command line.

5. Type the organization name that you want to define for all users who
install Office from this administrative installation point. Type the server
and share that you created as the i

Problem updating Admin Install of Office 2003 with the Technical Refresh

i Cherry,
OK, now I'm confused??? I'm referring to the Technical Refresh for Office
2003 Beta 2 (I noticed your articles all refer to Office XP). I downloaded
the Technical Refresh, which is "opsetup.exe", from your site
(http://microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=37F9D6B2-8354-4DDA-B86
B-CF9CE8616D98&displaylang=en), which is the normal link right off the
officebeta.microsoft.com site, and it says nothing at all about being for
the Tablet PC? I already have the master Administrative Install done, my
problem is in applying the Technical Refresh for Office 2003 Beta 2 to the
current Administrative Install... Thanks!

Problem updating Admin Install of Office 2003 with the Technical Refresh

Post by cherry » Tue, 05 Aug 2003 15:10:20

Hi Marc,

Thank you for the posting again. As you indicated you are using the
Enterprise By-Pass Suite Product Key.

Based on your description, we think the most possible reason is the Volume
License Product Key. As you indicated you are trying to apply the
Technical Refresh for Office 2003 Beta 2 which is opsetup.exe downloaded
from our site. In order to better understand this issue, please let me
know how you obtained the Volume License Product Key for Office 2003 Beta
2. Or are you just used the previous Volume License Product Key for your
original Office version.

If you do not have the Volume License Product Key for the new Office 2003
Beta 2 but used the previous Volume License Product Key for your original
Office version, that can be the problem.

To obtain your Volume License Product Key, please do the following:

1. Obtain your Enrollment Agreement Number and be prepared to provide it to
the Customer Service Representative, as a Volume License Product Key will
not be issued without it. If you do not have this information please
contact your Large Account Reseller or Volume Licensing administrator.

2. Call the Microsoft Activation Center:
U.S. customers can call (888) 352-7140. (Note: Telephone number is for
Volume License Product Keys only.)

3. Obtain your Volume License Product Keys from the Customer Service
representative. (800) 426-9400.

For more information on the Volume License Product Keys for Enterprise
Customers, please refer to this web page:

http://www.yqcomputer.com/

Hope the above informtion and suggestion helps and answers your question.
If anything is unclear or if there is anything further we can help with
from our side, please let me know.

Problem updating Admin Install of Office 2003 with the Technical Refresh

Post by Marc Konch » Wed, 06 Aug 2003 13:30:58

herry,
I'm sorry as I don't have the book in front of me right now (I'm at home),
but the original copy of Office 2003 Beta 2 that I used was ordered from
Microsoft, and came with 3 information CDs and 12 program CDs in a foldout
package which included Office 2003 Beta 2, Exchange 2003 Beta, etc... It
also came with a booklet in the front jacket, and inside the booklet on one
of the later pages in the upper portion of the right-hand page it has an
"Enterprise By-Pass Suite Product Key" to use if you plan to deploy to more
than 10 machines for testing, which I assume bypasses the Product Activation
which only allows 10 installs. The "Enterprise By-Pass Suite Product Key"
in the booklet is printed just like the rest of the booklet and is not a
sticker, so I am therefore assuming that it is the exact same 25-digit code
that's in everybody else's booklet, so I could post it here if you would
like or e-mail to you privately...

Problem updating Admin Install of Office 2003 with the Technical Refresh

Post by cherry » Wed, 06 Aug 2003 23:05:39

Hi Marc,

Thank you for the posting again.

We performed further research and testing on this issue based on your
descrition.

We found this behavior occurs when Office 2003 is installed but the
ENTERPRISE_IMAGE=TRUE property is not set.

To resolve this problem, re-create the image including the ENTERPRISE_IMAGE
property. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Run Setup with the /a option to create an Office 2003 administrative
installation point.

NOTE: Type the 25-character Volume License Product Key that is assigned to
your organization, and not the retail product key, when you create the
administrative image.

2. Do one of the following:

- On a computer that has never had Office 2003 installed, click "Start",
and then click "Run". Type the name and path to Office 2003 Setup, append
NOUSERNAME=True ENTERPRISE_IMAGE=True, and then click "OK". For example,
type the following: "\\server\share\admin_install_point\setup.exe
NOUSERNAME=True ENTERPRISE_IMAGE=True" (without the quotation marks)
-or-
- If you use the Custom Installation Wizard, start the Custom Installation
Wizard, and then set the following properties on the "Modify Setup
Properties" page:

NOUSERNAME=True
ENTERPRISE_IMAGE=True Save the settings in the Custom Installation
Wizard. On a computer that has never had Office 2003 installed, click
"Start", and then click "Run". Type the name and path to Office Setup, and
then click "OK".

3. After Office 2003 is installed, create a disk image.

For additional information about how to create an imaged-based installation
of Microsoft Office 2003, see the following Microsoft Web site:

http://www.yqcomputer.com/

Hope the above information and suggestion helps and answers your question.
If anything is unclear or if there is anything further we can help you
with, please let me know.

Sincerely,

Hi Frank,

For the Office 2003 beta the Volume license key is
located in the 'getting started' book, near the
back, if I recall correctly.
