Vista does not do this by default so you have to work around it.
Create a script to run containing the command:
netsh wlan connect name=-WirelessProfileName- ssid=-AdhocSSID-
interface="-Wireless Network Connection Name-"
replace the three items in -italics- with your details
and set it to run at start up by putting it in the startup folder under
start up:
C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start
Menu\Programs\Startup
