group by conversation and sort by last message

Post by peter36 » Thu, 08 Jan 2009 03:17:12

When I check the "group by conversation" option in windows mail, the
conversations are sorted by the timestamp of the first message. Is
there a way to configure windows mail so that the conversations are
sorted by the last message in it? Thanks.

Outlook express has this problem. Mozilla Thunderbird has this problem.
Windows Mail has this problem. I don't remember if Outlook has this
problem. I honestly don't understand why this bug hasn't been fixed yet.

It's not really a bug, more like a missing feature.
It probably hasn't been implemented because very few users would
want it sorted that way.

I disagree that very few users would want it sorted that way. Many people
I've talked to who use Gmail cite the way they handle email threads as the
biggest reason they use Gmail. If I get a reply from someone to an old
thread, the thread is now by definition the most recently active thread in my
inbox, so it should be sorted as such. I don't want to miss new emails I get
simply because they were replies to very old messages. I would argue that
this is in fact a usability bug.

We all have different ways of working. I never sort by conversation, since
most of the emails I get are stand-alone, so I sort strictly by the time stamp.
