non alpha characters cleaning strings ??

non alpha characters cleaning strings ??

Post by Floyd Well » Sun, 18 Mar 2007 03:08:56

Hello,
Is there any function in sql to facilitate the cleaning of a string to get rid of all non-apha characters ?
For instance, if a Last_name is O'brian, it will return Obrian, or if the lastname is Hally-Roma, it will return HallyRoma ?

It would be basically, the sql way of doing 'tr -Cd '[:alpha:]'.

Thanks,
Floyd

You get the source, and you get a README file in the top-level
regexp.1.0 directory which, when read, tells you how to use the DBDK
(Datablade Development Kit) for your platform. There is another README
file in the src directory.

Assuming you have the DBDK file(s), the rest of the code looks pretty
much platform neutral.

his is a multi-part message in MIME format.

Real Ugly but it works and maybe easier than installing the datablade:

create procedure rm_nonalpha(p_char varchar(50,1))
returning varchar(50,1);
define i, mlen smallint;
define my_return varchar(50,1);
let my_return = "";
let mlen = length(p_char);

for i = 1 to mlen
if substr(p_char,i,1) in ("a", "b", "c", "d", "e", "f", "g", "h", "i",
"j", "k", "l", "m", "n", "o", "p", "q", "r",

ery cool, thank you.
I'll have to evaluate whether that is a lot slower than having the developers put the same type algorithm in stream of this process.

Thanks again.
