Comcast speed decrease?

Post by Gad Zoo » Mon, 19 Jan 2004 03:16:55

I'm in the suburban Philly area and I assumed I got the speed increase
in the middle of December since download speeds and speed tests jumped
up to where they should be if I had a 3mbit connection. (Although I
never received the "official" email from Comcast stating that they
increased my speed at no additional cost.) For the past two weeks or
so I noticed I'm back down at speeds I had when it was 1.5. Has any
one else had this problem??

I don't know what your problem might be, but about two weeks ago, my
Comcast speed dropped to less than half speed (it was around the 3mbit
mark). After a lot of checking hardware and calling Comcast, I
reinstalled XP (format and new install) and the speed is back up to
where it should be. I'll be damned if I can figure out what the
software problem was (it's definitely not adware or spyware slowing
the system down).

Have you tried calling Comcast? Ya never know...:)

Hope you get back on track soon, though!

Dude . . . sit down. Take a deep breath. Relax . . .

Your problem was not on your computer. You did not have to format and
reinstall XP. If your speed is back up to where it should be, it is
coincidental that it happened to return to normal after formatting your hard
drive. Now aren't you glad I told you to sit down? :) -Dave (ducking and

No -- it wasn't a coincidence at all. I restored an image of the drive
that I had made while having the problem, and guess what? The problem
returned! I restored the image of the new install and the problem went
away. I didn't fall off the turnip truck yesterday...:)

And who is this Dude guy?

If you are worried about spyware/adware, get AdAware AND Spybot. Used
together, they should eliminate most bad software. Spybot has an immunize
function that can help block some from installing themselves.

If you use IE, you may want to use the IE-Spyad list
( http://www.yqcomputer.com/ ~ehowes/resource.htm#IESPYAD) to fill your
restricted zones site. This makes it much harder for known spyware/adware
to install itself.

Unfortunately, there is no one magic program that can do it all. One
advantage of the above 3 is that they are all FREE.

A couple weeks ago, my speed dropped in half, with no explaination. I
posted the issue here, but didn't see any replies. A couple days later, it
was back to normal. Nothing was changed on my end.

No need to duck. No way it has anything to do with the OS. I live in Marlton,
right outside of Philly, and have noticed inconsistencies that overall, have
made things worse. What's most strange is that when I perform a speed test I
almost always hit the 2.5 mark which is higher than I've ever measured, but
surfing the web has been an excruciating experience ever since the
"upgrade". Sometimes it's '56k' slow. This leads me to ask, exactly what did
Comcast do to "upgrade"? [My son, we're on a 3 PC Lan (Linksys), has
noticed the same thing.]

Nevertheless, when I did a format and clean reinstall of XP, the
problem went away. Out of curiosity, I used the backup image of the
"problem" OS, and the speed decrease returned. New OS install, no
problem. We have a two-computer home network, and the other computer
was fine during all this.

3mbit
test I
but
did

Did you notice a slowness when moving files across your Lan? The only
thing I can think of is that somehow your IP parameters were changed. Did
you apply any parameter tweaks?
