preventing backup suppression in CVS mode

When I edit files that are mangaged by a version control
system (CVS), emacs does not generate backup files,
because it assumes I don't need them.

How can I get it to generate backup files?

I guess this does it:

vc-make-backup-files's value is nil

Documentation:
*If non-nil, backups of registered files are made as with other
files. If nil (the default), files covered by version control
don't get backups.

Johan,

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, your idea didn't work. It should,
but
it didn't. Changing the value of vc-make-backup-files had no effect on the
behavior.
Did it work for you?

I'm using:

(setq vc-handled-backends nil)

which (AFAIK) disables CVS support from (GNU) Emacs completely,
and I'm very happy with it, everything works with files in
CVS just like any ordinary files.

I don't know. I have never tried it. That's the reason I said "I
guess" above.

Anyone?

How did you set it? I have (setq vc-make-backup-files t) in my
.emacs.el and it works just fine.

I set it using M-x set-variable (or something similar) while editing a file
checkout
out from a CVS repository.

I also checked it's value before and after using M-x describe-variable (I
think).
I don't have an .emacs.el file, but I'll try it out.

Henrik,

Thanks for the information.

I set the variable in my .emacs file, and now I get backups for
CVS-controlled files.
I suppose it needs to be set before the buffer is opened.

Thanks to all who responded.

This maybe helpful or maybe not. I was once confused as to how emacs
and XEmacs creates backup files. Emacs only saves backups for the
first time you save a buffer.

I created a workaround and posted it on the Wiki.

http://www.yqcomputer.com/

In that document, "version-control" refers to Emacs' built-in numbered
backup facility.
