Animation of mechanical parts

Post by av » Sat, 28 Aug 2004 09:55:41

I need something to help me design simple mechanical systems. I want
to be able to "construct" an arrangement of, say, a series of cogs,
cranks and gears and see how they will move. I'm not sure whether I
need to look into CAD programs or Animation programs. (or CAD
animation?) But the simpler the better as I have no real need to do
large complex constructions (nor want to deal with any steep learning
curve). I just need something that will help embellish my pencil
sketches relatively quickly.

As you can probably tell from my question, I'm not very versed in what
is out there. Any help/directions will be appreciated.

Yes, you can make animations with it - ask for a demo cd, think
one will let you play with the program for 45 days before it
times out.

Pricing sounds a little off. At the recent SIGGRAPH one of the trade
journals
compared the 7 or 8 major software packages. I noticed a three-tier
pricing:
- a student package- free to a few hundred dollars. Some major
component is disabled.
- a starter package- in the $2000. These seem to have some capacity
limits.
- a professional package- in the $8,000 - $10,000 range with no
limitations.

It was a little off. I called one of the regional dealers that the
Autodesk site refers me to. The cost is $4000. Still way too much for
me.

Check out freeCAD or CADSM at

They are basic 3D CAD with Motion Simulation.

All the best,
