Retrieving Custom Properties on a dimension

Retrieving Custom Properties on a dimension

Post by Rick Razza » Fri, 28 Jan 2005 07:56:08

I would like to use an XML/A discover request to retrieve custom properties
on a dimension (not members, but the dimension itself). Is there schema
rowset which will return this information?

Thanks,
Rick

What kind of custom properties are you referring to here?

Thanks,
Akshai

The kind called "Custom Properties" by Analysis Services

The kind that are created using DSO using
bjectCustomProperties.Add(...), where bjectis an instance of a DSO
dimension object

I'm really not sure what else I can say to explain this. I wasn't aware
that there were so many kinds of custom properties for a dimension.

I don't believe that you can retrieve administrator information like that
from a cube. It may be possible with some of the new metadata XMLA Discover
structures with 2005; but not with SQL Server 2000. In 2000, that is the job
of DSO -- not XMLA. Sorry.

Thanks, Dave. That's pretty much what I expected at this point -- I'd been
trying just about every OLE DB for OLAP rowset with no luck. I just ended
up writing a script to generate an xml document with the custom properties
for cubes, dimensions, and levels using DSO.

couple of tools that you might find the source interesting:

OLAP Scribe

DSO/XML (source)

DSO/XML (binary)

The other tool is the Metadata Scripter located on the SQL Server 2000
Resource Kit -- it is a VB6 app which generated VBS code from an Analysis
Services object.

All three of these apps walk DSO and generate something, i.e. MS Word
documentation, XML file, or VBS script.

Hope that helps.

hanks Dave. I've actually used all of these (I use the DSO-XML utility to
create snapshots of the schema). I've used the OLAP Scribe as well. I've
found I prefer to extract the data using XMLA (with some DSO now for the
custom props) and use XSLT to create Excel XML or HTML.
