Maya 4.5 Hypershade -- very frustrating UI!

Post by Reuben Kin » Thu, 04 Sep 2003 08:44:23

Maybe its just me being a newbie with Maya but I find the Hypershade GUI
*extremely* frustrating.. Why are there no scrollbars to navigate
around? And zooming in and out -- why can't I use a mouse wheel or a
simple key stroke? I have other gripes but these two are my main
ones.. It makes it very cumbersome to work with a complicated shader
network.

So -- is there anyone out there who knows of a mod or a hack (or just
some hidden knowledge) that would make my usability experience of the
Hypershader more enjoyable? :)

Thank you!
Reuben

@west.usenetserver.com:

I assume you have a three button mouse? Doing any kind of camera (including
hypershade/hypergraph) movements without one is tedious.

how could scrollbars possibly be faster than the current setup of Alt +
mouse buttons to navigate...? i think maya has the most fluid GUI
navigation of any package. i used to hate having to use a wheel in the
place of a real middle mouse button, but after a couple of days practice
u'll never want to go back to an old 3 button non-optical mouse ;)

if u r actually only using a 2 button mouse then punch yourself in the
head. ;)

the only gripe i would have of the hypershade is the inability to easily
customize new buttons like u can with the shelves. i could edit the
hypershade mel file but its a hassle...

use Alt (aka "Meta") + middle mouse button to "scroll" and Alt + right mouse
button to zoom in and out.

I was afraid this would be the answers I would receive... Yes I am aware
of these methods.. And I hate them. And I also understand some of you
actually LIKE them (for whatever deranged reasons ;)

*sigh*

I am depressed.

inside the operating system. they are so good :)

Your other alternative is the Multilister. It's the same thing as the
Hypershade, just a little less sophisticated. The the Multilister predates
the Hypershade to Maya 3 or something like that. Anyways, you can open the
Multilister by typing:
Multilister;
from the command line or Window|Rendering Editors|Multilister
It uses scrollbars and not the native Maya controls (at least this is the
case in Maya 5.0)

Once you actually buy Maya, you'll come to love it...
