3D Studio Max to Cinema 4D

3D Studio Max to Cinema 4D

Post by Pete » Sat, 17 Apr 2004 23:32:51

I'm thinking about getting Cinema 4D.

Can anybody tell me if it can 'import' my objects from 3D Studio Max or
do I need some conversion tool ?

Thanks!

Cinema4D (mine is CE+6) opens 3DS files but not files with the filetype .max

In article <c5otd0$ugs$ XXXX@XXXXX.COM >,
XXXX@XXXXX.COM says...

OK, so I'm half way there...

Unfortunately I have quite a few .max files... :(

Will version 8 open or import them ?

The only reliable method of reading .Max files is a copy of 3dsMax - and
sometimes that isn't 100% Even conversion apps such as Deep Exploration
still need a copy of Max installed on your machine before they handle Max
files.

If you know someone with a copy of Max, get them to export the objects from
Max as .3ds files.

Yep, you can look all over the web but you wont find an application to
convert max files. You have to save them as max files and then import them.

Recently, the new format FBX (Kaydara Motionbuilder) format became
popular, and both 3D Max and Cinema 4D have free plugins to convert
to/from FBX. FBX preserves most (if not all) information and is one of
the best "intermediate" formats to transfer objects between 3D Max and
Cinema 4D. Some people had problems with wrong scaling of objects when
using FBX. To resolve that go to preferences in Cinema 4D and make sure
that scale is 100%. May also check things in Max too. Note that FBX
plugin only works with Cinema 4D 8.5. I don't know exactly requirements
on the 3D Max side.

Another good format is OBJ - Cinema 4D handles it pretty well. Or you
can use 3DS but that will bring over mesh only, no textures, UV mapping,
etc.

I Don really know but I think 3ds max can export to Wavefront (.obj)
Format ?? This would be a nice Format to import in c4d with textures and so
on.
