Object translation from 3DS MAX to C4D

I'm running Cinema 4D 8.5 and am trying to find a way of converting MAX
objects so that I can use them in C4D. More specifically, there's a
free spider model on the 3D cafe website that I want to use for an
animation project, but I don't have access to 3ds MAX and none of the
converters I've tried support MAX objects. Can anybody help, either by
pointing me to a successful MAX->C4D object conversion tool (ie a
freeware/shareware one) or by converting the object into a format that
I can open in C4D. (All the converters I've tried require MAX to be
installed in order to open the object.)

AFAIK you can load it like any other object via the file menu. Just take
a look at the import/export options. Every object type mentioned there
can be loaded like any *normal* c4d object.

I tried just opening the object in C4D, but I just get "Unsupported
File Format!" message popping up. Any other ideas?
