soooo slow... PM 7.0

I'm a PM newbie, but certainly not new to software... just got tired of
messing around with Publisher. Anyway, after checking the book I have
obviously missed something.

I'm creating a simple newsletter, ... brought in text from word, a graphic
from PhotoShop, and this thing is slower than frozen ketchup.... and my
machine is a P-4 with a gig of ram. If I click in the text that came in
from Word, it's crazy!

I did try just making a new text box and typing in directly in PM, and it
works fine, regarding speed. But that was on another page.... although in
the same document.

But even just scrolling on the page with the Word text and graphic (which
you can't do with the wheel ...ARG), is VERY slow.

Reading more reviews last night, I learned that what I really need to do is
buy InDesign, but ......

Thanks for any help on what I'm doing wrong here.

1. make sure your graphics display is set to normal (under preferences
ctrl K)

2. Place, don't paste only eps or tif files in pagemaker. And resize the
image in photoshop so the image is at 100% when placed (at the
appropriate resolution)

or if that link doesn't work

is

In addition to Jay's excellent advice:
I never had a lot of luck with Word in PM. Are you placing,
copying-and-pasting or linking with OLE? Placing is your best bet. Also,
consider saving the Word docs as RTF.

If none of that helps, I would guess it's an issue with video memory. Is
your video RAM shared? Most non-pros have very little dedicated video RAM,
and it can make a big difference in screen redraw IME.

nothing happens. I press F1, and nothing happens. I reinstalled PM, and
it still doesn't work. ?????

Yep. It's been a while so I might not remember the details of when the
problem occurs exactly, but it is something like when you do not "My
Documents" pointing to the same drive that you installed Pagemaker. In
any case you can get around it easily by having your browser open
file:///C:/Program%20Files/Adobe/PageMaker%207.0/RSRC/USENGLSH/Help/Help.htm

Make any appropriate adjustments for your system, such as changing the
drive letter. After the Help file is open save the "URL" and use it in
the future when you want to access Pagemaker Help.
