Questions to POV-Ray

Post by darkhabit » Fri, 02 Apr 2004 18:08:55

First ... hello to all newsgroup readers of comp.graphics.rendering.raytracing.
It's the first time that I'm here at this newsgroup.

I'm a student from Germany (sorry, for my sometimes bad english) and I work on
my Master-Thesis. The theme is a combination of L-Systems and there
visualisation and simulated evolution. For the visualisation I'll be use
POV-Ray and Lparser or RayTraced Evolution.

The questions:

1. Exists a legal way to disable the Splash-screen of POV-Ray?
2. Can I distribute POV-Ray within the scope of my Master-Thesis? Are there any
think that I have to notice with the license?
3. Have someone experience with RayTraced Evolution?

I hope someone can help me.

greetings
Jan

Questions about pov-ray seem to get answered much faster on newsgroups
on the server news.povray.org. There is also a web interface to it.

That is in the windows GUI for Povray not in povray itself. Have you
looked at the start up switches?

As I read it, if you simply pass it out it is the same as they could
get themselves by downloading. There is no registration for
downloading so there is no difference. Best to find email addrs on
www.povray.org and ask.

The development of raytracing over the years? There is an IEEE
journal of computer graphics. At least there was 20 years ago. There
must be a history article in there some place.

My problem is, that I can't post a message, because I get the message that
"Posting will be available once we finish the transition to the new server.
Please be patient!".

I'll try it a month before, but I get the same message like today. :(

Exists a POV-Ray Version without a GUI? That will be perfect for me! Do you
now, where I can download it? On the POV-Ray Web-page I found only the Window
Version with the GUI.

I have looked at the start up switches, but I don't find a switch to disable
the splash-screen.

With RayTraced Evolution I mean a programm. It called RayTraced Evolution. It's
like Lparser to visualize L-Systems.

Program ended abnormally on 02/04/2004 02:48, Due to a catastrophic DarkHabits
error:

You can set it up in a newsreader too. You don't have to use the Web interface.

You can take the Unix sources and compile them with Cygwin to get a console app
for Windows.

It's only there for a second or too, is that really too annoying for you?

It can be. If you're embedding povray in another program, or you're
running it in a loop (say, animation) where traces only take a few seconds.

Actually, the MoRay program invokes povray without the startup screen
(or at least only one start-up screen, leaving it run in the background,
maybe?) Consider looking at the GUI Extensions menu.

All of them. Certainly the linux version.

povray scene.pov
or
povray scene.ini
or (I guess for Windows)
povray.exe xxx.pov or xxx.ini

from a shell.

Create the .pov and .ini files with your favorite text editor. If you
have a favorite IDE set the run program from a compiler to the povray
executable.

I'm using newsgroup not so often and the newsreader of AOL can't find
news.povray.org. I'll try it with another newsreader.

>You can take the Unix sources and compile them with Cygwin to get a console

hmm ... Interesting. And after the compiling I can use it like a real console
app? Thanks for this idea.

The problem is, I have to use it in an Evolutionloop (Genetic Programming). I
use L-Systems (Lindenmayer-Systems) to visulize objekts like trees.
In the frist step a grammar (L-System) is defined and the tool translated it to
a POV script and POV-Ray make a graphic.

Now came the Evolutionpart. The L-System became a fitness-value on the basis of
the image. Depending on the fitness, the L-System will mutate to another
L-System.

This Evolutionloop is going on and on. And this isn't look good.

I hope you understand me.

But MoRay is not free (or I understand it wrong). I need it for my
Master-Thesis and my Professor would like to use it for other
Research-Projects. So he need a programm without paying something.

I only find one Version of POV-Ray 3.5 on the POV-Ray Homepage. And this
Windows-Version come with a GUI (a Editor). When I start POV-Ray on the console
and give POV-Ray the POV-File, he starts the GUI.
I can start POV-Ray by using the Windows-API "winexec". By this way, I can hide
the Main-GUI-Window, but not the Splash-Screen.

Note that news.povray.org isn't the newsgroup but rather the
computer/server. That is, news.povray.org is not like
comp.graphics.rendering.raytracing, but like aol.com.

Just in case there was some confusion there as to what you were trying
to configure.
