Future date avoids download?

Post by AbrahamLin » Sat, 10 Sep 2005 10:44:31

Hi all.

I have a simulation on my webpage that requires very fast replacements
of one gif with another. I have preloaded my images. That caused a
vast speed improvement. It still is not quite fast enough, however. I
notice that it is completely fast enough when I tell my browser not to
check whether the files are out of date. Of course, I can't tell my
user to change his browser settings.

If I give all my gif files a date in 2007, will my browser (or some
browsers) decide that they don't need to check for a newer version? I
could test and find out, I suppose, but the difference is subtle and
depends on whether my ISP is having a good day. Has anyone tried this?

Regards,

Rick

Perhaps replacing the images is not exactly the answer.

If it really is that your trying to show several pre-loaded images
in quick succession , then maybe putting each in a positioned
div , and fiddling with zindex, visibility, clipping values
or something of that ilk would work faster.

If it needs to be continuouse perhaps setInterval or setTimeout
could be used to pump the manipulation of the style attributes
so as to keep the browser responsive.

I think in an animation , actual image replacement is probably the
last choice.

Anyway given the sketchy information I hope my response was
at least of some help

Hm. Interesting idea, Dr. Clue. Sounds challenging, though. Is there
an example of this "shuffling rather than loading" on line or in a
book?

I'm sure there is one *somewhere*, but I tell you what.
I'm sitting in bed recovering from 3 years of hospitals and surgeories
and I'm bored , so if you email me a URL containing just the animation
portion your working on I'll scribble up one for you and post it back
here as well as email you a copy.
