i,

I've installed postfix (2.1.5), cyrus (2.1.18) and fetchmail on my
debian server (sarge, Kernel 2.6.9). The system was running fine for a
few month, but suddenly i have a serious problem and neeed some help

1. cyrus login and administration is not possible anymore(via Evolution
or telnet or cyradm)
2. cyrus is filling up my logfiles with incredible speed and megabytes
of messages.

Because i have not changed anything in the configuration files, i'm
wondering what is going wrong.
i removed the complete cyrus package from the system and installed it
again, but the problem occured again

-Maybe a problem with a debian package update ?
-a few days ago i installed websieve, but removed it also.
-file corruption ?

I don't know.

Greetings,

Markus

I.

I'm not an expert, but will try to point out what I can see:

Why are you using an old Cyrus version, why not the latest current stable
release?

Things that might have changed over time:

Hardware problem - possibly hard disk corruption, or power fail that caused
logical file system corruption.

Virus - could be a virus on one of your workstations that is flooding your
mail server.
You should try disconnecting the server while troubleshooting and check.
Check the postfix/amavisd queue - is it full?
You can also try to stop postfix daemon and see how cyrus behaves without
incoming mail traffic.

I thinkg that this is the main problem, and you might need to restore the
mailboxes file from backup.
Take a look at:
/var/lib/cyrus
and see if you have a backup folder that you can restore from.

Try running "fsck" on the file system where "/var/lib/cyrus" is (or on all
file systems to be on the safe side).

This also looks bad, but maybe it simply means that cyrus has stopped
because of the previos error with "mailboxes.db"

>Why are you using an old Cyrus version,

Debain does not provide the current release

I, think it's mailboxes.db file, which is corrupt

Ok, done. Cyrus is filling up my harddisk on his own.

file

Yes, i think you are right. I'll try to repair mailboxes.db first.

Greetings,

Markus
