computer sound card - crappy string and wind instruments - any fix ?

Hi all,

I have recently started playing again with midi files. I downloaded
the free Anvil Studio so I could edit instruments and manually enter
music.

I have shown two synths , one a Nvidia DLS Synth , and the other a
Microsoft GS wavetable software synth.

Both sound really bad when using instruments like violin and cello and
almost as bad for trumpets and saxaphone.

I realize from past efforts that some of those are very difficult to
get a good sound from .

Is there any way to load better instruments, or do I need another
synth card or something.

The brass I could maybe live with, but I really want a nice sounding
strings section.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Money is very tight for me , thats why I am using Anvil Studio, but I
can save a few hundred
if that is what I have to have .

regards

There's supposedly an awesome free strings synth for PC in form of vst
called StringZ2.

Edirol has String Quartet or something in the past and still
available.

but for few hundred you can get really really good hardware MIDI sound
module.

if for some reason you really need software, native instruments/
steinberg has very good software sound modules.

If you decide to use SynthFont (www.synthfont.com) then the sound
quality question is delegated to your choice of soundfonts. While
there are plenty of lousy soundfonts out there, there are also many
good ones.

Good luck.
