[cyd@stupidchicken.com: Emacs 23.1.91 pretest]

Emacs 23.2 is in pretest, see below. The latest version 23.1.91 just
built on my XPSP2 box.

Please give it a try and report any unusual findings.

I'm especially interested in reports, whether success or failure,
about building and using on plain DOS or its clones (as opposed to
Windows).

TIA

Emacs pretest 23.1.91 is now available for download via FTP, at the
following location:

ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/emacs/pretest/emacs-23.1.91.tar.gz

The xdelta against the Emacs 23.1.90 pretest is here:

ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/emacs/pretest/emacs-23.1.90-23.1.91.xdelta

This is the second pretest for what will be the Emacs 23.2 release.

In particular, note that we have reverted the GDB-UI package back to
gdb-ui.el. This is the same code-base as Emacs 23.1, with extensions
for reverse debugging and displaying STL collections. The GDB-MI
package will be postphoned to a future version (either 23.3 or 24).

Hi,

If my XP machine wasn't on the fritz, I'd be all over this. So I may
not be too helpful in building this for a while.

What's new exactly? IIRC, not much was planned for 23.2, at least
nothing that mattered to DOS much (lexical binding branch?? Mac OS X
port??).

BTW, we still don't even have an official 23.1 package for DJGPP yet.
I know you're extremely busy, so I definitely don't expect you to do
it. Heck, I've even considered making them myself, but I don't have
any timeframe planned.

I guess I could build it in FreeDOS. However, to be honest, I'm in no
hurry at the moment to try that. Several other minor things on the
brain. But nag me if you really need me. ;-)

Not much, it's primarily a bugfix release. If it is stable enough,
chances are that the next release will be 24.1.

Well, I thought I'd do it, but got even busier: Emacs switched to
Bazaar as its VCS, and I'm working on adding bidirectional editing to
it. So no promises, unfortunately.

Thanks.

Hi,

I'm surprised it's not Git, considering how beloved that is these days
(Perl, NASM, Stone Soup).

..sdrawkcab daer t'nac I (but I guess you can) ;-)
>> So no promises, unfortunately.

I didn't expect any. Two questions, though:

1). Are there any files that have hardcoded data (e.g. paths) in them
that should be avoided when making the .ZIP? Anything that would be
site-specific or only run in LFNs (or SFNs), etc.? Just off the top of
your head.
2). Would it be horribly wrong to make /beta/ use the SYSTEM_MALLOC
build (e.g. Vista)? I figure /current/ can be normal, so users at
least have a choice and don't have to recompile.

BTW, thanks for your efforts on this editor, it's obviously very
useful. And DOS ain't dead yet!

I'm actually glad it's not git, because it kicks a** on GNU/Linux, but
sucks on Windows (and requires top install MSYS, a Cygwin fork).

Anyway, the real reason was that Bazaar is a GNU project, while git
isn't. You can read the discussions in emacs-devel archives, several
months ago.

Nothing should hold file names from the build system. I used to grep
everything for X:/foo/bar (where X:/foo/bar is the directory where I
built the binaries) to make sure no such bugs crept in.

That'd be fine, thanks.

^^^
Should have been "to install MSYS", of course. Sorry.
