Announcement: 256 GB file support for Enhanced DR-DOS!

Post by Udo Kuhn » Mon, 16 Jan 2006 23:56:54

Hi folks!

I have released a new WIP version of Enhanced DR-DOS 7.01.08. Its most
spectacular feature is support for the new FAT+ filesystem extension
which allows files to become as large as 256 GB (minus one byte). It
also fixes another bug related to LFN support.

If you want to test it, please download it from the site listed below
and report any problems in the Enhanced DR-DOS Forum at
http://www.yqcomputer.com/

Nice, though I've no particular need for a 256 GB files right now ;)

I've looked at the site a few times, but never seen any installation
docs. Am I expected to install OpenDOS* over installed FreeDOS or
something?

Also, are there any docs on the DR-DOS API? I presume there is a
multithread-api, but I'm not sure. I'd like to take a look, if there
are any docs on it.

* Or whatever you call the project, EDR-DOS?

In the first place, Enhanced DR-DOS is meant to upgrade existing DR-DOS
7.0x installations, so you would need to install DR-DOS 7.0x first.

The official docs reside at http://www.yqcomputer.com/

Enhanced DR-DOS, though EDR-DOS is a valid abbreviation.

Right, however, if would be nice if you'd actually include some info
on these matters on your site. I found some DR-DOS, tried to install
it in VMWare, but it failed when it tried to boot from the hdd ;/

Is there anything preventing you from distributing ready to roll
installation images?

K, I think I'll stick to EDR-DOS for a while then ;)

Yes, unfortunately, there is - both space and bandwidth are limited on
my webspace, and since I have to pay for it, I am reluctant to upgrade
it. Besides, there are so many links to the DR-DOS distributions on
Club DR-DOS ( http://www.yqcomputer.com/ ) and other DR-DOS web sites that I
feel it is not necessary that I also offer them. Also, Club DR-DOS has
an excellent FAQ section that answers most of your questions. If I ever
find the time to add a FAQ section myself, however, I will include
them.

Regarding your problems with VMWare, I think that EMM386 needs
additional command line options to make it compatible; that is about
the only thing that should be needed to make DR-DOS run in the VMWare
environment.
