Mr. Message (AIM client) 9/2/2004 update

Post by Mart » Sat, 04 Sep 2004 15:12:14

Mr. Message for OS/2 is an instant messenger client which is capable of
communicating over AOL's Instant Messenger network using the OSCAR
protocol (used in the Win32 AIM clients, jBuddy, gAIM, Kopete, ICQ, and
a variety of other clients).

It has been updated with the following changes:
* Added the ability to choose a different Oscar login server and port.
Edit your session entries from the Session Manager to change this.
* Removed chat support from the capabilities list reported to servers
until chat support is actually implemented (cures a crash when someone
attempts to invite you to a chat).
* Added the ability to set your client profile message. The user will
be able to enter their own profile in the next release.
* Added the ability to set your status to Away. The user will be able
to enter their own away messages in the next release.
* Fixed a potential infinite loop in the user information parser if some
bad or strange user information is received from the server.
* Fixed playing the "new arrival" sound effect when a user changes from
away status to active (this was only intended for users that newly
signed on).

Apologies for the lack of updates last month. I've been out of town
frequently.

You can download it here:
http://www.yqcomputer.com/
or with the full source code here:

Please read the README file before running or asking for support. As
always, feedback is appreciated.

Should it be eable to deal with ICQ account? as i've no AIM subscription,
i've changed the default server to login.icq.com... but it always reports
a "Bad authorization..." error.

Thanks!

I didn't change any server login but I was able to connect to ICQ out of the
box. So I guess you don't have to change the server to connect to your ICQ
account

Thanks for the follow-up. I don't have an ICQ account anymore so I
can't test this myself, but it sounds like this is the correct way to do it.

Just to confirm, I have always connected to icq through MrMessage
without changing the server.

Umm, as it didn't work with default config. i've been testing a new login
server... but I "ALWAYS" obtain a bad authorization message even if
my account works fine with all icq clients i've tested :-?

The latest release seems to be missing aclctl10.dll (at least the one
that includes src). I was trying to build the whole thing from the
source and I got the error that it didn't exist and didn't have the
files necessary to build it. Trying to launch mrmessage from the files
in the zip is wants the aclctl10.dll.

Thanks for the report, Andy. I refreshed the source archive to fix
this. Looks like that one DLL was the only file I missed. If you have
the binary distribution, you can just use the DLL from there if you
want. Otherwise, just re-download the "srcbin" version from the same
location.

I don't have the source to this component (it's Aaron Lawrence's) so all
that is missing is the DLL.

I have another similar report from a user. Are you sure that you are
entering your ICQ number (instead of any name that you might have
associated with it) for the "Screen Name" field"?

Marty,

while we're on the topic, whenever I startup this version of Mrmessage
I get a warning "error initializing printer object. Failed to obtain
handle for information context (rc $82023). Printing functions not
available".

I hit OK and everything is normal after that.

That's coming from Aaron's rich text viewer. I'll ask him about it. Do
you have any printer objects set up? You should at least have IBMNULL,
right?

Ok. I'll see about getting myself an ICQ account so I can hopefully see
what's going on. Other people have reported this problem too.

Any ideas on what you did right, Adrian?

I found that the 1st time I ever ran MrMessage - I couldn't get ICQ to
run using my normal login. The 2nd time I started MrMessage - ICQ
logged straight in - no idea why...
