Port busy?

Post by Seymour » Tue, 17 Feb 2004 10:06:33

I'm using an external modem on COM1 and want to go into a terminal
application to observe the responses to various AT commands. When I
bring up HALITE or PROCOMM, I get a port busy error message. Faxworks
is not running at the time. The relevant drivers are:

DEVICE=G:\OS2\BOOT\COM.SYS

DEVICE=G:\OS2\MDOS\VCOM.SYS

Device=H:\COMM\FAXWORKS\Fmd.sys

eCSCoNet works fine. Any suggestions?

Hi,

Suspect a device driver, probably the faxworks one is opening the port
in non-sharing mode so nothing else can access the port. Try commenting
out the faxworks driver and see if the other program can get access.
Com ports can be opened in sharing, non-sharing, read only .....modes if
the driver requires explicit access it might open the port in the
non-sharing mode.

eCSCoNET works just fine. Also, FaxWorks turns out to be one of the
applications that gets a busy response, so it looks like eCSCoNet
keeps it open after it terminates.

The answer from Craig was correct. Here are copies of the two CMD files
that I used to use to open and close the COMM port for use with Fax
Works. One is named FAXOFF.CMD,and the other is FAXON.CMD, both for use
with the FXRCV.EXE program.

*********************************************************

FAXOFF.CMD

CLS
ECHO ON
delay 3
START /INV /BG /K I:\BONUSPAK\FAXWORKS\FXRCV.EXE -OFF
DELAY 8
exit

**************************************************************

FAXON.CMD

ECHO OFF
START /INV /BG /C I:\BONUSPAK\FAXWORKS\FXRCV.EXE -ON
EXIT

**************************************************************

Then why does FaxWorks also sometimes tell me that the port is busy?
Also, isn't FXRCV only relevant when PMfax is running?

Sorry, its been too long since I have used FaxWorks. (I don't have it
loaded on this laptop that I've been using for some time now.)

Then something else is grabbing the COMM port and releasing it. Could be
a DOS or Win-OS2 session that is not completely closed, for instance.

Check settings in your other programs to see if they can set (aka
"forced) to release the port after they are done with it.

I used to use FaxWorks running in the background, so that it could
answer faxes, while still using other programs at the same time. So,
this sharing can be done!

Hopefully you'll here from somebody else using the same programs and
setup as you have.

It could have been eCSCoNet. Whatever it was seems to have goone away;
I haven't seen it since.

As a FaxWorksPro for OS/2 user, I can confirm that it does not interfere
with ProComm or RMComm, or the PPP (IP) dialer.

Can't say anything about eCSCoNet, but suggest you look into it as being the
culprit.
