How to get back icons etc. of CD burning apps.

Post by Michae » Mon, 12 Jun 2006 21:35:39

Something in my Warp3 + all-Fixpacks went bonkers several months ago. No
problema when I shut down; partition table was trashed when I tried to boot the
next morning. After recovering the PT and letting Checkini do its thing, some
Desktop folders were gone, including my CD burning tools. As far as I know the
apps. themselves are intact, but I can't figure out how to make use of them
without the Destop folders. (I don't even know how I could UNinstall the stuff
- even if I wanted to, which I don't - because, of course, the uninstall tool
was in a Desktop folder that no longer exists.)

I've been through the bizantine install process twice - once on each of two HD's
- had a terrible time getting each app/helper/add-on/whatever installed in
proper order and do *not* want to do it again if I can avoid it. So is there a
way to manually recover the Desktop folder(s) I need, without installing?

I have ADC_056, CDR2_0_0, CDRDAO-OS2-1_1_3_a1, WPSWizard-0_5_1 ... and whatever
else each of those apps. needs.

Did you have archiving enabled ? Then it should be easy. Just revert to
the most recent version.

Hi, Lars

Or, if you prefer, "Gruess Gott". I had an email from southern Germany just
this morning.

If you mean Desktop archiving, no, it was turned off. My habit is to turn it on
right after a fresh Warp install, to save the vanilla Desktop, and then turn it
off and keep it off in order not to lose the vanilla Desktop. That has saved me
from having to reinstall Warp but, of course, it leaves me wide open to the
problem I have now.

You might consider revising your procedures. Turn it on whenever you have
a working Desktop that you consider a candidate for restore. Make the
backup and turn it off. With the built-in desktop archiving you can save
3 generations and the original.

Without a backup, you probably need to reinstall the apps and run
checkini/cleanini to clear up any leftover cruft.

Steven

With the built-in desktop archiving, you can save any number of generations
that you want. I save five, for example. "Three" is the default, but you can
change it in the Desktop Properties notebook.

That's some sort of add-on that does that. The default one keeps 3 and can't be
changed.

Hi Gang

The default is 3 backups and the Original of the install for a total of 4 choices

eWorkplace allows Original and 9 more backups

XWorkplace also allows more although I can't check the number right now, but I would think it is 9 also

Regards Al

From the feline-looking whiskers, I think "Bunny" may actually be a cat. Or
possibly the hybrid result of Canadian hanky-panky between the two species.
In Canada, anything is possible.
