Re 6809 vs Z80 vs X86...
One needs to consider whether you want the code to run FAST or SOON.

The code density for x86 is better than the 68K until you need to talk to
more than 64K. Suddenly the x86 bogs down due to the need to look after
segment registers. Segment offset reg overflow is particularly *** . One
of the floppy disk S/R's I did for the 68K took me 46 bytes to do what the
8088 BIOS did in 56 bytes.

Similarly, try modifying the "Sieve of Eratosthenes" program to determine
prime numbers between 1 and 65537+. Suddenly the x86 compiler has to jump
to the next (more cumbersome) memory model, with the appropriate penalties.

The Core 2 duo E6750 is about 30% cheeper than the E6850.
Is the extra money worth it?
