help with transferring a cd writer from a b&w G3 to an iMac

Hello, newbie here, and I'm not sure if this is the right forum, so I
apologize in advance.

I have LaCie CD burner (an old one - 12x) which works great on my old
B&W G3, OS 9.1. It's firewire, and never had a problem with it.

I'm trying to get it to work on an iMac (400mHz G3). I installed the
original LaCie disk with its drivers but it never recognizes it - I
upgraded it to OS 9.2.2, and when I go to the Profiler, I see Firewire
out there, 2.85 I think, but nothing about my drive. I thought maybe
it was the cable, so I took it back to the G3, and it fires up fine.

I see there are 2 extensions for firewire on my G3 - they're there on
the iMac. Am I missing something else?

or... instead of this - what's the feasibility of putting a new
internal drive in there, with say a cd burner/dvd player?
can anyone illuminate me, or point me to the proper forum?
