Yamaha CRW4416SXZ External SCSI CD-R compatibility with Adaptec 2902E SCSI card?

Yamaha CRW4416SXZ External SCSI CD-R compatibility with Adaptec 2902E SCSI card?

Post by gkauche » Fri, 05 Nov 2004 00:53:42

The Yamaha CRW4416SXZ External SCSI CD-R has an HD50 external
connector, and the Adaptec 2902E SCSI card has a DB25 external
connector. Is there a scsi cable that I can use to connect these two?
If so, am I compromising performance by going from 25 pins to 50?

Thanks,

Gary

Additional questions:

My Adaptec 2902E only has an external 25DB connection port (no
internal). Currently, it is connected to my scanner (Microtek
Scanmaker X6EL) alone. Does anyone know if the 2902E is capable of
handling more than one scsi device in a scsi daisy chain? If so, I
would like to add a Yamaha CRW4416SXZ External SCSI CD-R via the DB25
scsi port 2 on the scanner using a 25DB to 50HD scsi cable. Would this
be the correct way to go about it, or would it be better to put the
scanner at the end of the chain instead?

Thanks again,

Gary

Make sure the scanner's termination
is turned off and the Yamaha is
terminated, then double-check to
make sure the devices have different
SCSI IDs and that neither is using
SCSI ID 7, which is the typical ID
for the controller itself. That
done, it should work fine.

Would there be any benefit to be had by putting the scanner at the end
of the daisy chain instead of the CD-R?

Have the unit that can be terminated as the last device.

Not unless there's something
wrong with the CD-R's SCSI
termination -- e.g. it uses
removable resistor packs and
they're missing. Many older
SCSI scanners are permanently
terminated, so it's typical
for something like a ScanJet
IIp to be at the end of the
external SCSI chain -- but if
the scanner's termination can
be disabled (as the presence
of a second SCSI connector
implies) there's no reason to
avoid connecting things up as
you describe.

The 4416SX (S=SCSI; E-EIDE; X=external; Z=retail pack with software) has a
SCSI-2 connector, but it is N-SCSI internally.

It does follow the later SCSI-2 protocol, however.
