pool.ntp.org empty ?

Post by Henk P. Pe » Fri, 15 Oct 2004 16:28:54

Hi,

Is the 'pool.ntp.org' empty ?

% dig pool.ntp.org a

;; QUERY SECTION:
;; pool.ntp.org, type = A, class = IN

;; ANSWER SECTION:
pool.ntp.org. 1h30m IN A 212.254.206.135

212.254.206.135 == zbasel.fortytwo.ch

I noticed a big dip in the 'score' stats for 'ntp.cs.uu.nl'
and some others, taking us below the magic '5'. It appears,
that everyone is out. If true, it shouldn't happen.

As of 2004-10-14/08:20Z, I still have connection to four of the
nl.pool servers. Hosts zbasel.fortytwo.ch, authoritative for
pool.ntp.org, and www.ntp.org, authoritative for ntp.org, have
populated lists, and so do my internal DNS servers, but my
principal ISP's and another public DNS server draw blanks.

There was a bug in the scripts that check the pool time servers
periodically, so during a network outage at the monitoring machine all
"unreachable" pool servers were thrown out of the DNS. Things should be
back to normal by now.

Except maybe for buggy nameservers that cache DNS results far longer
than they should :-/

I have fixed the script now - additionally to checking if the local ntpd
thinks that it's synchronized to the net time, it also pings two
servers outside the local network before running the scoring.
