Postscript Errors; from Pagemaker to RIP & PDF "trouble shooting no help"

I have had this problem for sometime. I have a harlequin rip that I
use daily and no for reason it randomly gives me PS errors on
pagemaker files and will not print. I have gone through the
troubleshooting document on this site. I have spoken with PM tech
support, the RIP tech support for HOURS and I am pulling my hair out
trying to files to print. I did upgrade the RIP from 5.3 to 5.5,
reloaded it. Tried a new HD and loaded it on their, the RIP guys
insist it isn't a RIP problem but a PM problem. I have sent them files
that I couldn't RIP and they could NO PROBLEM. Their suggestions were
that the file was corrupted and that I should copy and paste to a new
file and it'll work, and yes sometimes it does but very rarely.
Another suggestions was to delete a graphic at a time til it goes.
Sometimes it works but again every rarely.

It does not have ANY problems with it taking Illustrator, Quark or
CorelDraw files. Lately I have been making a pdf taking it into
Illustrator manually pre-flighting the file for errors and "things
that drop off" and then sending it to the RIP, but this is getting
ridiculous! Today I am working on a file and when I make a PDF from
the print screen, color separated it puts the graphics (tif & jpg) as
the PMS color NOT black for the negative. When I open it in
Illustrator the black page is fine, but the PMS color page it gives me
an "reinterpreted" (unknown pdf color found) error and doesn't display
the graphics.

Has anyone experienced this OR have ANY ideas how to fix this problem?

I get errors, such as that, regularly.
PM files will error to the Harlequin RIP
but be fine going to the Fiery , Rampage or Distiller.
I forget the error - somwthing about nothing on the end of the pipe.
-
Excuse me - but - you are nuts putting the PDF into Illustrator for
output (or anything).

If I am not going straight to Rampage,
I place everything into InDesign.
It has a great print engine and can place just about anything.

I do a fair number of PM files and have not seen anything like you describe
with either 5.3 or 5.5.

I sometimes see an arror with a PostScript file, but after I( distill it all
runs smoothly (sometimes the reverse, a pdf erros but the postscript from it
runs smoothly)

why put the pdf into illy?

when you can preview it on the rip...faster.

Thanks MSD I'll try that, I just have so frustrated with this problem,
and of course true to form, no matter which software manufacturer I
speak to, they blame the other one, you know how it goes.
Take Care, Cas

@posting.google.com:

What version of Pagemaker are you running ?
Are you up to date with patches ?
Are you printing separations or composite from PM ?
Are you printing direct to the Rip or via an imposition program ?
Does this occur with both Mac and PC Pagemaker files ?
What OS version is running on the machine running PM ?
How are you handling graphics and fonts when printing from PM ?

I very rarely have problems with PM files ripping unless there is a graphic
or font in the document causing a Postscript error eg. limitcheck error or
rangecheck error etc.

We print composite Postscript from PM 7.02 from Windows 2000 and Mac OS 9 by
printing to file and using the "for prepress" setting and include all
graphics and fonts in the Postscript stream. This workflow is very reliable.

If you are printing direct to the Rip, try printing page independent
Postscript to file, then dropping this on the Rip. IME most Pagemaker
ripping problems not related to links are caused by the lack of page
independence in the standard PS output from PM.

Mike

The reason for illustrator is if there is a problem with the pdf, I
can usually fix in illy, and yes sometimes it is easier and faster
just to shoot the pdf directly to the RIP.

Thanks for your input

Mike:
I am running PM 7.01 with all the up to date patches that I know of.
Although you say 7.02 maybe I'll check that.
It happened mainly on separations.
I am printing diretly to the RIP.
I am running PC.
We are completely Windows 2000.
We have tried with linked files, preflighting the files, embedding the
files, pulling them up in their native format to make sure everything
is correct.
Most of the time I am getting typecheck error; offending command; OR I
get invalid access; offending command; and in answer to the other
questions posted, yes it is a Harlequin RIP.

Thanks for your input

Aandi:
The postscript error are: typecheck; offending command OR invalid
access; offending command; usually they are what Adobe on their
website call "unintelligible Postscript code" on their support
knowledge document number 328515.

BTW These suggestions and this forum is great, THANKS everyone for
their input, IT IS HELPING! ~ The InDesign suggetsion is working!!!

Please post the whole message, including any extra lines following. As
usually happens you have left out key parts of the message. PostScript
errors *always* say "offending command" so that doesn't narrow it down
much. And you should assume it is unintelligible - yet!

What ppd are you using? I've seen access-related weeors (but not just with
PageMaker) when using old Lino drivers under W2K or XP. Or, for that matter,
with recent mac drivers as well. Seems the recent drivers don't like the
level 1 ppds.
