[TMW] Suggestion for newsreader improvements

This would be a nice way to make your newsreader more fun to use:

* Remember my name and e-mail address, and signature

* Have a direct link to TMW support page and Peter Boettcher's FAQ.

* Make searches bring up results in TMW support page and Peter
Boettcher's FAQ as well as CSSM.

* When searching, provide one result per thread, instead of 30
results for a single thread containing 30 posts.

* Add common CSSM words and acronyms to the spell check, like the
word "MATLAB."
Also allow the spell check to be on by default so I don't look like
a moron when I post and have the spell check ignore the lines that
start with ">."

A wider input box would be nice, as well.

And a fixed width font when displaying the posts would make code
reading much more pleasant.

[TMW] Suggestion for newsreader improvements

<snip, ML newsreader improvement suggestions...

I am forced to use a web-based newsreader for CSSM (at work anyway).
I find myself doing this quite often:

I'm looking for a post, but can't find it using TMW's web-based
newsreader. So I google it
(author: XXXX@XXXXX.COM keyword1 keyword2 etc).

Then I cut and paste a line of text from the post I want into the
Search box on TMW's reader page, using quotes. Using home/end to
navigate the tiny box.

When I find the post I want, I can cut and paste it's
(newsreader.mathworks.com) URL into my post. The extra steps are a
PITA.

I think it's fair to say that the majority of CSSM posts are
written/read using newsreader.mathworks.com (thanks TMW). It would
be really neat if we could search the archives from this site in a
google-like way.

<snip, newsreader stuff - blah, blah, blah...

Sorry for the massively obvious English gaffe. I obviously meant
"its" not "it's". The shame, the shame.

Hello Michael and Steve,

Thanks for your feedback. We realize that more and more users are
using our online service and will take these into consideration as we
make improvements to our site.

We have links to our Support site in the footer section of all
newsreader pages. Perhaps, they aren't visible enough. We'll
investigate this further.

[TMW] Suggestion for newsreader improvements

[...]

here something else to look at -- 'Newsgroup FAQ' link on page
" http://www.yqcomputer.com/ " returns a 404 error at MIT.
though i'm able to find an FAQ at www.mit.edu/%7Epwb/cssm/ from another
page at TMW web site.

just out of curiosity, is there any significant difference between
posting messages to CSSM through the Matlab web site and posting
messages through my local newsreader?

Hello,

I tried this from the MATLAB Central homepage as you indicated and
the link seemed to be working. Could you try this again and let me
know if it works? It could have been a temporary down time for the
site.

No there isn't any difference posting to CSSM through our newsreader
or your local one.

[possible broken link]

i suspected the same, but tried it again an hour or so later; same error
page. i tried it just now (30nov04, late afternoon), same 404 error.
it's odd that you can get to a valid page with that link, but i cannot.

i'm not terribly worried about it -- i can find the FAQ through another
link -- but it is odd behavior, and i thought you'd like to know. if
you think it may matter, Mozilla 1.73 and IE 6 return the same thing.

okay, thanks.

[TMW] Suggestion for newsreader improvements

I really like the newsreader. I especially like the way you see the
whole thread at once but can move quickly to the piece you are
interested.

I think every one of Michael Robbins' suggestions would be a big
improvement especially, the remembering name, e-mail, signature. Also
the input window really should be as wide as the output window.

One other small thing would be to show the name of the original
poster as well as the most recent. Since we are remembering things,
maybe as an option so as not take up too much width on a low res
screen. The input and output font could be configurable too.

I have found the search to be quite good, except for the two points
made. It doesn't seem to include the posters name or email address
and it turns up lots of results which all point to the same thread.
