The Acorn is still around?

I thought the Acorn died a long time ago. Am I wrong? What's the latest
model, OS, etc?

Sort of. Acorn was effectively asset stripped, but the os and the
machines carried on.

The company bailed out of the desktop market a few years ago, but the
operating system they wrote continues to be developed two other
companies (RISC OS Ltd - www.riscos.com - and Castle -
www.castle-technology.co.uk).

The most powerful machine (not technically the "latest" in
chronological terms) is the Iyonix: www.iyonix.com - while the latest
OS you can run on any other machine would be the current release of
RISC OS Select, from www.riscos.com.

Alternatively, you can now run that OS under Windows via emulation,
using software from www.virtualacorn.co.uk.

Thanks to Jess and you both, for your replies. I checked out the links.
It seems dead outside of Europe, and a lot of the information isn't very
recent.

In article <2t8_c.29$ XXXX@XXXXX.COM >,

If you want the latest news (though I will admit that things seem to have
calmed down recently, especially after... no, I won't say!) then best
check some of the sites that specialise in RISC OS related news.

Examples:
Drobe Launchpad - http://www.yqcomputer.com/
The Acorn *** village - http://acorn. *** village.co.uk/
My RISC OS - http://www.yqcomputer.com/
The Icon Bar - http://www.yqcomputer.com/

(Sorry if I missed any!)

Other than that, a good googling will turn up plenty.

There are dealers in Austrialia and New Zealand, producing their own
versions of machines (importing motherboards and assembling with
locally sourced other parts) Some nice freeware is written by authors
over there too.

There are also contributors to the newsgroups from africa.

Where are you?

I'm in the USA. I haven't found a single Acorn dealer in the States, even
after a lot of Googling.

It would seem ROX on Linux is as close as I can get.

Since Acorn decided to let the bean counters tale control and the bean
counters decided to sell the family jewels and remove Acorn from existence
you'd be hard pressed to find a dealer.

I don't think Castle have got around to marketing in the USA.
Googling for Castle Technology, or better "Iyonix" would get you more hits
but probably not a US source of hardware.

Some would say Virtual Acorn on Windows (but then you may not want to
subject your machine to Gatesware ;-)

Sure, but I meant a dealer for the current Acorn clones.

I found the above to be true.

I can't find a US dealer for Virtual Acorn either, but I can download ROX.

I'm sure a European dealer could supply it to you.
